Re: The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

Oh my! I am now sipping on a Eagle Rare 10 year old Bourbon Whisky.
It is a very nice Bourbon for the price of around 30 dollars. A virtual steal in today's market.

Blasphemous!

Re: The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

brinktastee you are welcome with your comments on bourbon.
I tasted a few ones like Four Roses, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey and the little different one the Jack Daniels.
My Scotch whisky collection is now at 50 different bottles. I built a small illuminated wooden stand to expose them.
And finally I bought the Brora 30 years bottle. Tastes excellent (like other ones less expensive) but it is always difficult to justify its price. Rarity I guess.

Re: The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

I bought a week ago during my holidays in South Africa this whisky. It is an interesting experiment to recreate a whisky that is from 1907 and of which two crates of bottles have been recovered a few years ago buried in the snow in antartica and that had been abandoned by the Schakelton expedition of 1907. The bottle, the casing the packaging and everything has been recreated as per the original one. To recreate the taste, various single malt scotch whiskies (varying between 8 and 30 years of age) have been blended by experts. You have Speyside, Island and Highlands including a very rare Glen-Mohr whisky. In fact the original was a malt from Glen-Mohr distillery. Finally the bottle is dated as per the original one that is 1907.
I found the price very acceptable for a release that is limited to 50'000 bottles.
Now comes the taste. Simply said it is excellent and very equilibrated for such a blending. Unique taste difficult really to compare. I am not a specialist of blended whiskies, my reference is only single malts, so others may do a better analysis. I will keep it in my collection as a specialty.

Re: The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

Surely you read that the original bottles are on their way to be returned to the store below Shakleton's hut on the Antarctic? Here's a link of one article: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2013/01/19/shackleton-whiskey.html?cmp=rss

Funny is how news gets mangled when copied on and on... it's 102 years old [that is, it was there 102 years], but the local AP put it as 120 years old.

Got a small collection of vintages, but lost interest... totally on wine and the occasional small glass of liqueur. Maybe one day put them out on ebay... and convert the proceeds to a new cruncher ;>)

Hi Hypernova
You tasted the Laphroaig whisky in Copenhagen.
Next time your are in Denmark you may find a homegrown one.
I happened to listen to a radio programme about
Stauning Whisky
which was quite fascinating.
Their products are pricey, but rumor has it they are good.

blushing Personally, I have a hard time developing a taste for whisky.
Bourbon goes down better with me, but I'm really a Gin and Tonic woman.

Re: The Scotch Whisky collector's and amateur corner

nice to have you again on the forum little mermaid. smile

There are now many companies around the world producing quite excellent whisky.
In 2012 the japanese won the worlds best single malt whisky award and also in other categories.

I am open to novelty but I also consider the notion of "terroir" as being important hence still concentrating on Scotland.

I also have a few bourbon bottles and appreciate them.
