JP,
good catch ! Congratulations to launch this thread !

I remember about the one at UD !

Well, we have a lot of beatiful and astonish birds to watch in Brazil !

The Brazilians Birdwatchers are agruped in Yahoo, Orkut, Linkedin, and so on.

There are planned touristic trips to cover this enjoyable activity across the country.

There are a truested chain of birdwatchers here, mainly specialists and scientists which keep a frequent schedule to cover all months of the year and many important biomas in Brazil, just to do it.

Last year we had the great surprise to discover seven new birds species never found, two are discovered by birdwatchers, and subsequently investigated and described by the scientists. It was amazing !

Below some links about it in Brazil:

Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

I would absolutely love to go birding anywhere in South America! We have a small office in Sao Paulo and in Buenos Aires so maybe someday.
But till then I will be stuck here in the states doing most of my birding.
This is a link where we here in Minnesota post our rarely seen and unusual birds.
I just bought this lens for birding. When I get a chance I will post a few pix that my son and I have taken.

Brinktastee,
I don't live more in Sao Paulo (a crazy and huge city, believe me !), but have a summer house near from (100km), were I living for at least half of year. You are welcome when came to Brazil. Specially here.

I used to watch a lot of birds during my Sao Paulo times, once there are many places to do it (The Zoo Park, USP University park, a lot of municipality parks, Ibirapuera Park, The Atlantic Forest, The Bandeirantes route, The Fruits circuit, Lake Interlagos, Billings Dam, Japi Mountains, Serra do Mar Mountains, and so on).

The best book to have to do it in Sao Paulo or any other Brazilian city near of the Atlantic ocean cost, is called BIRDS OF GREATER SAO PAULO - Field Guide (Guia de Campo AVES DA GRANDE SAO PAULO, in Portuguese).

It is a great bilingual English-Portuguese softcover book, very useful and complete as pocket guide, which contain around 300 pages, with 273 beatiful pictures and short descriptions of a sample of some birds that we can find in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, many are species that you can find in many places of South America.

You can buy one in the website:

http://www.avesefotoseditora.com.br/#/Livros/

http://www.avesfoto.com.br/ingles/index.asp

but all birds places in Brazil have this guide to sell (US$ 27 dollars).

I have one guide in my office to compare all birds that I watch on my windows. It is front of a small grove area (preserved by my farmer neigbour). It's amazing and exciting when I have time to dedicate to do it.

I registered more than 100 species using this simple pocket guide, since 2008 when bought this house to install my office/labs. Birdwatching is a happy and relax activity to anyone !

There are a bunch of people waiting for these Barn Owl eggs to hatch.
This is very entertaining to watch. The nest box is above a school in San Marco Calf.

One egg has a hole in it and "max" is pipping when she gets off the eggs. Should not be too long now before max eats his way out of that shell.
EDIT: To know what is going on, click on the chat room, not social stream. If it says your banned then make an account for ustream and log in at the top of the ustream page then find the owl stream. The chat room is where the mods are hanging out.
