biggrin The OLDEST device still crunching on WCG

This thread is for us to discover the oldest host ever, crunching on WCG and returning results on a regular basis. Even if it runs a mix of WCG and other projects that's Ok.
So post here your Mathusalem Champion:

Device Type: Colossus, Eniac, PC Desktop, PC Laptop etc..
CPU type: Vacuum Tube, Zilog, Pentium III, P4 etc......
Year : 1941, etc....

Re: The OLDEST device still crunching on WCG

Uhm, are you after the "Date Installed & Registered" here at WCG for a still-active device, or is you after "that old box has been running DC since 19xx, but didn't join WCG before in 2010". smile

If the former, I've got an active WCG-device listed at... 20.05.2007.

If the latter, my oldest still-active computer is an Opteron-242, that's been running since... if not mistaken 2003...

So, neither is by any means close to being the oldest active WCG-devices. sleep

You are right to comment Ingleside. Both are interesting to know.
So yes we have two categories here:

1) The oldest in term of Date Registered at WCG and still crunching today.
2) Oldest machine, device or system that today crunches for WCG partly or fully even if it registered in 2010. I find it interesting to see up to what past technological generation is still able to contribute.

Re: The OLDEST device still crunching on WCG

According BOINCStats there are still some W98 contributing here, so it is likely something from the previous previous decade. My oldest active registered device, not loosing the identity when rebuilding with clean W7 is (restored the data_dir):

95711 work 27-12-06

last returned result per device statistics:

15-3-10 4:020:03:57:23 2,619,218 6,153

i.e. 40 months known as the one and same.

Re: The OLDEST device still crunching on WCG

tech wise, old compaq deskpro, PIII-600 kicking about 1 wu/day running 24/7. got pressed into service about 6 months ago after a crash. will continue to crunch but is coming off my desk (yes it is my prime work box atm) soon. This box runs Win 2000 ;) and will continue crunching and collecting my weather station data. its replacement is already crunching

Edit: crunches everything I throw at it, just takes forever, ie up to 72 hrs for HFCC

PecosRiverM that is a nice idea. If you can just get the 8088 to crunch and return just one result than you may well win the Mathusalem Cruncher title. wink

Sorry to break your bubble, but that box will run DOS with 640K memory. I know it will not be capable of running anything on WCG. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the minimum memory requirement is 128 M. I think the lowest box capable of that memory is a first generation Pentium 60. I think the 486 boxes maxed out at 64M memory.

I had an AMD K2 for while, but retired it because the work units were taking several days.

Cheers

The Rice-requirement is 50 MB, and would expect HCMD2 is even lower than this. The actual memory-usage on Rice seems to be around 22 MB max, and HCMD2 is lower.

Appart for the memory-usage, all the WCG-applications are 32-bit, so an 808x wouldn't be an option at all. A 386 is 32-bit capable, but even it can run 32-bit, it's not certain it can run the WCG-applications without crashing-out...

Re: The OLDEST device still crunching on WCG

I had one of those W98 computers crunching until I broke it by deleting a critical system file last year. One of these days I'm gonna have to pull the HD out and plug it into something else and undelete it. Now if I can only remember what I deleted. d oh

What is the oldest OS that BOINC will support? That will give a good hint of what the oldest might be. I've got some real old computers in the garage (CP/M), but I think that they are too old to BOINC. If they did it would probably take 100 years to complete 1 workunit.

Cheers coffee
