HCC progress update

Dear WCG members.

Thank you for your generous donation of computing resources to our project. We are excited about our progress, which we summarize in the Marhc 2010 progress update: http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~juris/WCG/index.html

Importantly, an updated version of our image analysis program has passed the Bete testing and has been released today. Resulting from a collaboration with the IBM Toronto Software Lab, the optimized HCC software will process work units in less than half the time.

thank you,

Igor Jurisica

Re: HCC progress update

Dr. Jurisica

The link titled March 2010 Update leads to the Apr 2009 document. The correct link that seems to work is this:

http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~juris/WCG/UPDATE-MAR2010.pdf

Congratulations on the 2+ speed increase for the project.

Cheers

edit: Maybe there was anticipation in the newsletter as I just got an old 6.06 work unit.
The optimized HCC project passed Beta testing and has been released to production on Thursday, March 25, 2010.

Maybe we still have to work off what was already in the feeders :D

Re: HCC progress update

For anyone interested in the science:
The techniques being developed here (with your help) facilitate crystal growth en mass; by allowing selection of viable crystals for research. The viable crystals are used mainly for X-Ray Crystallography. This is a technique where proteins are concentrated and grown en-vitro. They are then X-Rayed and the resulting X-Ray reflections are analyzed to identify protein structure. The molecules exact shape is deduced from the proteins known side chain sequence. From the shape of the molecule, the bond strengths and charges can be calculated. The results allow scientists to identify sites where molecular interactions occur (binding sites) and potential medicines such as protein inhibitors, molecules that block binding sites, for example.
Although this is a HCC project and will initially make an impression on Cancer research, it will impact on many other research projects when they incorporate the techniques being developed here.

Re: HCC progress update

Indeed, these are good news! smile

Sek, I guess you have to revise your Active Projects Estimated Progress & Remaining Duration chart... wink

Edit: I just saw, that in your chart the project name is not correct... It's name is Help Conquer Cancer, not Help Cure Cancer. tongue

Re: HCC progress update

That took as long as the chart has been up [Ctrl-F5 will cause it to disappear], and no only a very slight change for now after the latest 'I spied'... near imperceptibly except for you. The gantt chart is chopped off at April 2012, for presentation reasons. HCMD2, HCC, FAAH are all planned further out, even with growth expectation and there's the always present "additional work" too ;>)
