Woke up this morning with 1 of my Laptops that run WCG/FreeHal was in standby mode. Thinking it had rn out of WU's I push the power button to bring it out of stand by.
----------------------------------------I saw that it had about 10 WCG WU's to go and that it started running one of the Nutritious Rice (NR) WU's as soon as it was up and running. I came back an hour later to find it was in standby again. I took it out of stand by and rebooted it. After rebooting it started right into the WU it had been working on (NR). An hour later I came back and it had gone into standby again. I press the power button to wake it up and saw that the NR WU that it had been working on had ended with an Comp Error. I have not had any problem up to now. Got any ideas??? Thank you ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by TrustedDragon at Apr 2, 2010 8:32:21 AM] |

Uh-oh. .
----------------------------------------It sounds like a problem with your laptop. Since rebooting did not cure it, it sounds like hardware rather than software. Time to use Google to find some diagnostic software. Then exit BOINC and just run diagnostics, Lawrence Added: Sekerob has made a good suggestion. You might have an altered web site profile even if you never touched that laptop. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 31, 2010 4:46:50 PM] |

TrustedDragon,
----------------------------------------Plenty, but you're the one in front of the machine knobbing the options. As a first suspect, you may have activated that website profile only option for the BOINC client to go to sleep after you've stopped using it. The BOINC client message log would tell you that, so suggest you visit that part for starters. The option in the device website device profile is "Stop work after computer is idle for: 20 minutes" And of course the BOINC Manager activity option must be set "Run based on preferences." edit: Seeing the Lawrence is following the hardware trail, so he can help work that :>)

Thinking about it and it may have been longer than an hour since I have to get work for FreeHall about every 2 or 3 hours.
----------------------------------------I been running this laptop for a long time with no problem until it d/l some NR WU's. I do know that the Toshiba is NOT running the WCG BOINC because it was in the middle of a race on Prime Grid and I didn't want to have to try and "down grade" it. (At the time I was using a new BOINC then what was on the WCG site. I have had trouble with NR before but after I saw it run ok on my Dell 2200 Laptop I let the others d/l it too. ![]() |

UPDATE:
----------------------------------------Got home from work and the Toshiba was on stand by. It had done all the FreeHal WU's but only 2:11 of the NR WU it had started at 12:00. I suspended that WU and it started a non NR WU. I will see what happens. ALL other setting are the same as the other PC's running WCG. The only thing is they don't have ANY NR WU's. Not sure how that worked out. If it completes the non-NR WU then I will abort the NR tomorrow. (It's due on the 4th) ![]() |

The test would be to verify the options on the web-profile and set the Activity menu option to "Run Always" and to get a different project task, say HFCC to see if it repeats.
----------------------------------------FreeHAL... is that one of those what's marked as a non-intense projects?

UPDATE 2:
----------------------------------------The Laptop ran all night with no problem. I then set the NR WU so the laptop could go back to it. Sure thing it ran that NR WU for about 30 mins and then stopped. So there is IMO somthing about the NR WU that don't agree with my laptop's tummy! I will abort that WU as soon as I get home from work tonight. ![]() |

Is it using CPU time time when you look in the taskmanager? Have you checked on the Result Status page to see if there is an issue with other results in the quorum.
----------------------------------------NRW is very small so it's not like a resource limit would cause this. Given the project is practically finished but for late returns and repairs, not worth to ponder on, just would like you to test another WCG project on that machine... maybe the even smaller HCMD2. thanks

WCG/FreeHal are the only projects running on that laptop. I think the one it did last night was a HCC... or it may have been one of the others not sure. I did check to see if there were anymore NR WU's to do and glad to see that there was not.
----------------------------------------I turnned one in that had a comput error... I'll go and see if I can find out what it said was the error. TrustedDragon,
Since the project is nearing completion, the question I have is, "Does this happen with other projects, or only this one?" -Uplinger |
