In the US business comes first. Everything and everyone is subservient, including your genes.
----------------------------------------It is a fact of life that the US governments have allowed the patenting of genes, despite ethical concerns (genes are natural, ownership is a form of slavery, the owners have no interest in that field of science and are unscrupulous). Unfortunately the drug companies are now trying to buy up every gene they can. Often this is a ploy to prevent competition; allows them to keep selling their not-so-effective drug, without an alternative. Always this means there is a levy to pay on a drug – the only benefactor is the company, everyone else pays. Unfortunately once a gene is in commercial hands it stays there, and the US has a lot of influence so it can bully other countries (mainly allies) into following. It was terrible. I think that something need be made to stop it at depth level, to avoid abuses. Nature codes aren't valid subject for patents !

I am uncomfortable to see that the US Patent bureau allow it in the past, and probably without take in consideration the future implications over the people lifes, including in the law side to protect citizens against abuses.

Pity it took the American Civil Liberties Union to bring a case. You might think that perhaps the Patenting system would be diligent enough to have rejected such patent acts in the first place. Alas that is not the way it works. A regime gets in, then selects the judges and officials to fulfil the business requirements of the regimes backers. |

Good link, and good decision. Pity it took the American Civil Liberties Union to bring a case. You might think that perhaps the Patenting system would be diligent enough to have rejected such patent acts in the first place. Alas that is not the way it works. A regime gets in, then selects the judges and officials to fulfil the business requirements of the regimes backers. It's not the final word - Myriad Genetics is appealing the ruling, but hopefully the Circuit Court will uphold it. |

I saw this today on the FOX news chann. of all ! if you buy a mouse-trap and some wood and screws,,,etc.. you can patent a better solution [ by U.S. law]
