If at first you don't succeed...

try, try, try, try, try, try, and try again.

All of the errors were - exit code -1073741819. It looks like all of the failures were on Windows x86 clients. The one on 6.10.18 was on Vista x64, but I can't tell if the BOINC client was x64. The PV was done on Windows 7 x64, with an x64 BOINC client.

Number 7 passed validated.
ts01_ b034_ pe0000_ 6-- 617 Valid 4/10/10 05:21:51 4/11/10 19:30:03 8.82 117.8 / 119.4 (client version 6.2.18)
All of the errors were the mysterious - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005).
Are there really that many unstable machines out there?

Re: If at first you don't succeed...

Actually, whilst the original BFS FAQ gave a 7 points possibility of fail, the last one revises the view on this 1819 error:

02/04/2010 11:25:56

Contents:

The below error was for the S5R1-5 runs only. It's no longer up-to-date for the S5R6 and above runs. Please look at the default exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005) error instead.

Exit code -1073741819 (0xC0000005): This is the famous "General Access Violation". There a numerous reasons for this error to occur, from hardware problems to graphics drivers and more. Ideally when this happens, the "Windows Runtime Debugger" should start up and write a stack dump to stderr out that helps to further diagnose the problem. If the "Access Violation" is listed in the "*** Dump of the Graphics thread ***", it was almost certainly a problem with the graphics driver. The most common cause for an Access Violation listed in the "*** Dump of the Worker thread ***" shows "houghmap.c:" near the end of the first line of the Callstack. This is a problem that we might be able to do something about, we are currently hunting this. Apparently it only happens on certain machines, it might be related to the data these hosts are processing, but may also be a property of the hardware or other software on the system.

Kind of tapping in the dark. The Techs from their error reports could possibly draw correlations, which from a single or few forum reports is hard to derive... certain OS, certain CPUs, certain RAM, certain VM sizes? I just keep my vid drivers current and was recently offered to have that done again under W7-64 for the NVidia card.

Re: If at first you don't succeed...

Just out of curiosity, what does the video driver have to do with anything? Is it the screen saver that is crashing?

Re: If at first you don't succeed...

It's similar to the question: Why are my audio drivers needed to have my NIC working? Don't know, but if the SS is on or the Graphics button is hit, sure enough it is interacting in some way with BOINC.

Here's a copy of the old FAQ sheet... that's what I check when having this sporadic error... seen it twice and a boot resolved this:

Re: If at first you don't succeed...

I saw that. That's why I commented about the number of unstable machines. I found it odd that this particular WU had 6 out of 8 failures with the same error.

Re: If at first you don't succeed...

Don't think that the too many exits / zero status errors have anything at all to do with the error -1073741819 as discussed in the opening post. Your jobs are restarting too often, so think you need to review the client message logs, why eventually BOINC will call it a day and closes the job.
