Re: Technical hardware question - quad-core CPU choices

Oh of course it's his choice,
and who doesn't like points,
I'm watching my overall rank and team position like a hawk!
I was just throwing out some more information.
If I could afford/justify it,
my next machine(Titan) would be a dual I7 980X
or even a single socket.
But for 1100 US for a single 980x
and 300 for an amd black edition...
Again this hinges on IF the AMD chip can deliver.
With all the variable like cache size, memory speeds,
bus speeds, HT etc etc etc, In my thinking IF it can get
even say 70% of the results of the I7 980X for a 1/3 of the price
that's my chip. Even though points would be less, results/$$$
are my biggest factor. I look forward to benchmarks when they
come out. As well as information from other crunchers who take
the plunge. Oh if Intel comes out with cheaper 6 cores well then...

EDIT: Just saw a benchmark for the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T, the 2.8 ghz not the 3.2 by the way. I forget which benchmark they used but the
numbers were rougly the same for a I7 920 as the amd 6 core.
16000 (under 64 bit). for comparison a I7 980X was 27000.
but for 200ish bucks if they come out with a dual socket moboard
that should be more bang for the buck. I was just on amazon.com
and they had the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T (2.8 + turbo) for 224,
and they claimed it was in stock. the Black edition (3.2 + turbo)
was available for preorder and it's like 309 I think.
But then again, why not a dual I7 930...
unfortunately what I'm reading indicates they prob won't do either.
Back to the drawing board.

Re: Technical hardware question - quad-core CPU choices

Ok, at one of the computer sites I routinely check on,
they had a new Dual socket AMD 8 & 12 core workstation.
http://www.titanuscomputers.com/W3A-Super-Sta...p/w3a-super%20station.htm
the 16 core is $1995 USD(2.0 ghz), the 24 core is $3259 (1.9 ghz) Doesn't even come with an OS, now I just gotta find some benchmarks...

Edit: Found Benchmarks...Seems AMD's 16 cores would STILL be slightly lower than an I7 980X...

Re: Technical hardware question - quad-core CPU choices

the 24 core is $3259 (1.9 ghz)

Build two units with one 980X each. You can find them at 999 US$. This leaves you 1'261 for the rigs. Maybe you need a few hundred more.
But you will get 48Ghz on 24 threads out of the two rigs. The 24 core dual socket will get you 45.6 Ghz on 24 threads.
Now if you can overclock the AMD's over 2 Ghz then you may beat the two rigs.
It would be interesting if you buy a 24 core dual socket to compare your Points Per day production against two of mines. wink

Re: Technical hardware question - quad-core CPU choices

I really dont think I want to go up against 2 of yours.
The wimpiest 12 core was 744 US (supposedly I havent' found that price anywhere yet).
If the I7 970 (a 6 core at 3.2 ghz supposedly at $600 or less US)
comes out in 3rd quarter at that price, I'm picking one or two up on my trip. AMD can only dream of catching that. I am waiting on a 12 core benchmark, if anyone sees one please post it.
