Re: GPU and WCG

Yes, WCG is planning to port Help Conquer Cancer to CUDA and studying on OpenGL OpenCL. The speed with which this is evolving is proximately equal to Earth's Precession cycle. It's all about doing it right in a way that it does not need an IT science degree and does not interfere with regular system use, the quickest way to loose volunteers.

edit: spelling

Re: GPU and WCG

When pertaining to GPU crunching it will be OpenCL... that's what the latest 6.10 clients are enabled for and what ATI cards require as code to do GPU crunching, under BOINC :O)

Re: GPU and WCG

Sekerob,

Does that mean GPU-based crunching is going to be a reality here at WCG within 26,000-years faster than Earth's precession cycle? Just wondering.. confused

More Cryptique: Things will happen eventually, like Earth's Precession is inexorable, or as I said "It's all about doing it right in a way that it does not need an IT science degree and does not interfere with regular system use, the quickest way to loose volunteers."

Sekerob,

Ok. As they say: no harm, no foul. But your team can be called for "delay of offense" and that GPU touchdown seems unreachable still. biggrin

Not unreachable, in fact no farther away than 64 bit science apps cool wink blushing

Re: GPU and WCG

Hello fredski

One word can make all the difference. You missed out the word "seem". The phrase "seems unreachable" is not quite the same as "unreachable". Close, but not close enough.

Another thing that you missed to consider is the time dimension. WCG has been evasive in giving a time frame for the targetDate for a GPU implementation. Sekerob's choice of words to express a remote future for a targetDate is the Earth's precession cycle, or 26,000 years. Metaphorically, the word suggests the longest of times, and by extension, as good as unreachable, but not quite unreachable, and therefore -- "seems unreachable".
