Making solar energy economical is defined as one of the grand challenges for engineering within the 21st century by the National Academy of Engineering.
This is an important task. I encourage all to process 24/7/365 Remember development of solar energy also have the potential to lift millions out of poverty by providing clean, inexpensive energy to remote areas. http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/cms/8996/9082.aspx |

This project is scientifically and practically important. And it's also psychologically timely -- so many of us want something we can do in the face of the horrible disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. This is indeed something we can do for Clean Energy! ![]() |

I suppose this is an Intersting News about Clean Energy post, but it will have to do here, for now.
Photon enhanced thermionic emission could double efficiency of solar cells "Engineers at Stanford have developed a process which can harness the light and heat of the sun simultaneously, which could lead to solar cells that are twice as efficient as those currently available. Called photon enhanced thermionic emission -- or PETE for short -- the process differs from traditional cells which lose efficiency as temperatures rise, and the materials needed to build the cells are cheap and widely available. The engineers got around the lower efficiencies by coating a piece of semiconducting material with a thin layer of the metal cesium, which enables the material to use both heat and light simultaneously. While the materials as currently demonstrated work best in very high temperatures, the researchers indicate that in the near future, the materials could have wide enough application to make them competitive with traditional forms of energy". |

Yes very interesting I read about it.

yes it is nice seeing all the advancements in solar and the fact that people are trying to make it more useful is nice.. i just want to be able to crunch some without having to install Linux... so i wait and watch solar news

What you want is a nice new PC, with Linux and Boinc already installed, and a solar panel on the window facing side panel
![]() Perhaps one day we will be able to use that solar/heat technology on our casings, to convert the unwanted heat back into energy. |

How about shingles made of solar cells?
----------------------------------------http://www.ecofriendlymag.com/sustainable-tra...ernative-to-solar-panels/ http://hubpages.com/hub/SolarPowerShingles We need solar cells economical. Once the Time-of-Use is implemented in Ontario(Canada), It would be pricey to put up a farm 24/7. ![]() ![]() |

Thomas you somehow touched my "soft" point. I don't want to write much but just to point something.
Remember development of solar energy also have the potential to lift millions out of poverty by providing clean So called developed world tried to solove poverty in many ways. Unfortunetly this just can't work. I know it for fact that many people from poor country think that when they meet someone from western country they ALWEYS will get something for free. Because they can aford to give it... The conclusion is that eaven if you GIVE the best technology it does not help. This is much more complicated. Solar energy is a must becouse energy prices are going up. I would like to have my own solar energy... Solar energy is a must because we are destroing our enviroment. Solar energy is and will be hard to become more popular becouse of large money in oil industry... |
