home test for predicting lifespan

The researchers, who studied more than 1,000 people over the age of 100, identified a set of 150 unique genetic markers that, taken together, are linked to extreme longevity.

They expect to make a free test kit available on the Internet later this month to foster longevity research.

"This is a major breakthrough," said Nir Barzilai, director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York... "it shows you that 150 markers among millions are all you need to distinguish between people who live to 100 and people who don't."

Re: home test for predicting lifespan

Read the fine print. All you need for the free test is a complete sequence of your own genome. $10,000 to 100,000 U.S.

Cheers

Re: home test for predicting lifespan

Let's emphasize that you 'could' be living to become 100. You could also be hit by a truck tomorrow pondering how to finance getting that old. The pension actuarians would at least love to have that info, with a likely premium increase.

Re: home test for predicting lifespan

yes, your cost points are noted. i assume that in the future, 100-year old people will be in much better condition than they are now.

i think when the first digital watches came out they cost $400 USD, now you can find them for $10. same for pocket calculators.

hopefully some companies will be able to reduce the time and cost:

in the meantime, there seem to be some research benefits in these free test kits. also questions are raised about the aging process itself.
