Hello WCG
I came across an article about an alternative approach to protein folding prediction: tapping the human intelligence through a video game instead of algorithms executing on computers. "There's a lot of creativity and energy out there that is being spent on computer games that could go into solving scientific problems." - David Baker More snippets from the article: "In 2004, University of Washington professor David Baker developed Rosetta, a program designed to predict protein structures. The program can be uploaded as a screen-saver to people's home computer (so far 200,000 people have done so)." "But when people asked Baker if they could help fix the proteins their computer was trying to shape, he thought it would be better to engage them with and allow them to compete with the computer." My comment: If this approach gathers steam in DC, CPU-based crunching or even perhaps GPU-based crunching will have a run for its money. However, man cannot live without his machines so the two approaches may complement each other. Article: Want to help cure diseases? Play Foldit! Dave Anderson put up the best article I have seen about this on the BOINC Message Boards| News yesterday.

Wow,
----------------------------------------I had been thinking of how a game could be made that would use your daily scores in WCG to simulate a research based game (like 'masters of Orion') but would only read scores, while crunching in the background. But this game where you actually fold it yourself looks challenging/interesting. Not that I'm very good at tetris but... ![]() |
