Linux or Windows

So what does everyone use, Linux or windows? I personally use windows. I have also read that most of the project under WCG finish faster under linux mostly because of better libraries/optimization. So does that suggest that most of the computer power for this community is linux? I mean if most of the work is done by windows user, then shouldn't more time be spent to optimize for windows instead of linux? Or is the usage about 50/50 between the 2 OS.

You can have a flavor of the answer by looking at the daily runtime of CEP2 (Linux only for the time being) and to another one, e.g. HCC. smile
4 years vs 50!
Of course there are some configuration restrictions on CEP2, but I don't think they explain much of the difference.
Only a small part of WCG members are reading this forum, and even less are posting. So you must not extrapolate proportions you see in posts here to the whole WCG. I think most of the silent contributors, the vast majority, are using Windows since it is what was installed in the machine they have bought.

Re: Linux or Windows

I run Linux on the computers I own.

I work for a university. The Math, Statistics, and Computer Science departments share a Linux network that we use for most of our research. Linux was chosen for that because it is such an efficient environment for scientific computing. The Linux operating system just has far less overhead than Windows.

So when you wrote "...shouldn't more time be spent to optimize for windows instead of linux?" I don't think that's entirely the issue. It's not so much that BOINC or WCG applications aren't optimized for Windows; it's that Windows isn't particularly optimized for scientific computing.

I'm happy that CEP2 is getting more people to think about Linux.
