Question about libraries

Hi everyone.

Since linux is in part faster for world community grid because of it's optimized libraries
I updated the BOINC libraries in Windows.

8/20/2010 6:23:10 PM Libraries: libcurl/7.21.0 OpenSSL/1.0.0 zlib/1.2.5

They are now at their latest version.
Will crunching be a bit faster?

EDIT:Not sure it has anything to do with but einstein@home just started to move between 0.004% to 0.010% against old 0.003% to 0.007% after installing the new libraries.

Re: Question about libraries

Meddling with the libcurl release that the client relies on may render it broken for one or the other function or completely inoperable... the developers have been flip flopping back and forth with the included version.

It's the first time someone associates libcurl with the speed of crunching. The science app is pretty much BOINC version independent, WCG requiring 5.4.11 as a minimum.

Re: Question about libraries

So there shouldn't be any increase in speed?

In einstein@home I know see ocasional progress changes up to 0.013%.

I'll first see if results validate

You are doing the experiment, so I expect you to tell us what happens. smile

Re: Question about libraries

Einstein@home Wu validated correctly.

Will now see if a fresh FAAH Wu validates aswell

Re: Question about libraries

Be prepared if things start acting up such as client communication (yes that too) that you revert to the original libcurls which came with the client distro or run a BOINC repair.

cheers

Re: Question about libraries

Hello Falconet,
My guess is that the big speedup in Linux support library functions is for Linux-64, because any CPU that can run 64-bit Linux is guaranteed to have all the older SSE instructions. This could also be true for Windows-64, but I have never been given any figures. I would not expect any significant speedup for new Windows-32 or Linux-32 support libraries.

Please keep us informed of your discoveries.

Re: Question about libraries

Today, that's Tuesday, saw Linux wanting to upgrade a library... describing it as having been optimized and coded in (generic) assembly language... now that IS optimized.

Re: Question about libraries

Hello Falconet,

The curl library you updated only makes changes to the connection and possible network speeds. I have not read up on the changes, but that should not cause the science code to speed up any (I say this based on World Community Grid projects and how they work). It would only help speed up the work unit if periodic connections were needed during the calculations to the main server. None of our projects do that.

Linux is sometimes faster when computing these projects. The difference is the compiler that is used. Microsoft compiler (Visual Studio) doesn't work in linux, so g++ is used. Some projects show great differences in speed (HCC) between the compilers. But in general most of the projects run about same speed between linux and windows.

<personal opinion time>
I would never discourage anyone from using any operating system as you need to figure out what fits your usage and needs best. Linux is free to try, doesn't require a specific model computer to run on. So try multiple flavors.
</personal opinion time>

Thanks,
-Uplinger
