BOINC and power outages [RESOLVED]

I have a question. If you have a power outage, should you reset the project to remove any corrupted science applications? Or is the fact that whatever job you were running started over again at the very beginning sufficient to establish that any corrupted files have been cleaned up by my computer automatically?

There's no need to reset unless odd problems come up. Most times the work unit will restart at the last checkpoint, or at the beginning and complete successfully. If by the off chance a WU has a calculation error but still reaches completion, it will be caught during validation.

The BOINC software should be able to take care of this without intervention from you.

A power failure took down my two machines early this summer. When I started them back up, BOINC picked up the in-progress WUs at the most recent checkpoint and continued on without generating errors.

BOINC and power outages [RESOLVED]

jonathandl,
I think your question has been clearly answered.
Would you please be kind enough to edit your opening post's title and replace it with mine above.
That will show that this thread is complete and the new title will be more useful to other readers having the same worries as yours. smile

Reset project?

several weeks to a few months ago, my computer returned an "invalid" result for no apparent reason. Do you recommend that I reset the project? since then, projects other than dddt2 have returned several valid results. (I don't know about ddd2 because workunits for ddd2 are so rare.) Thanks!

Re: Reset project?

Hi jonathandl,
It is normal to get an occasional invalid. This is usually due to problems with the code and paths taken using a random number generator. Don't worry unless they become common or show a pattern.

ps: See how other computers handle an invalid unit on the Results Status page. This is often reassuring.

Re: BOINC and power outages [RESOLVED]

I am surprised that so few people have their machines powered by an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). For me, the problem does not arise, even though I lose power for a second or two very frequently, and for 10 minutes or so from time to time. The record was power loss for about 4 days.

In all these cases, if the interruption is short, the UPS just coasts over the interval and the computer gets power continuously. If the power loss is too long for the UPS, the ups signals the computer to do a controlled shutdown.

Re: BOINC and power outages [RESOLVED]

Jean-David, I suppose it really depends where in the world you are - as (thankfully), here in Scotland, power outages are very rare. Yes, they do occasionally happen - although it's more common for it to happen due to an issue with me/my computer (i.e., pulling the plug by accident/doing a 'hard reboot' etc.). Thus, for me, it's not really worthwhile installing a UPS.

gb009761, count yourself blessed in that respect although, I must say, I prefer my climate!

Over the years I've gone through four or five UPS's as we often have spikes and dips in the electricity. A few years ago the national supply situation resulted in regular "load-shedding" of whole towns or suburbs for two or more hours at a time, every two or three days. The UPS would then run flat. I do not recall any issues with BOINC. One does need to bear in mind applications which have long gaps in checkpointing, like Clean Energy.

Brown outs and spikes can kill a computer real quick. UPS can save your system. Where I live, get brown outs a couple times a week. The surge protection is worth the money if you own an expensive computer too.
