Re: Anyone know the secret of getting a Wifi Dongle to work in Windows 7?

I do not usually question the precision of speech, but do you mean WiFi as in I go to the local coffee shop to use my computer; or do you mean wireless networking as in I have my router in one room and a computer somewhere else in the domicile?

Re: Anyone know the secret of getting a Wifi Dongle to work in Windows 7?

My own Wifi router in this case, a choice of 2 of them and still no luck biggrin

I removed the devices ccleaned rebooted and windows installs and download the driver and the dongle can see the router(s)

But still it won't connect with the router set to WPA, WEP or even open

My first dongle was microscopic and cheap as chips so I figured I was just unlucky it's the edimax EW-7811UN the second is a Linksys WUSB100 ver 2

The first router is a Sky Broadband router (under the covers I suspect it is a netgear) My second router is the Linksys WRT160N V2 which you would have thought would work with the Linksys Dongle both potentially N

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit edition

I am sure that the dongles are working fine it's just that authentication handshake which is messed up somewhere in the Win 7 machine. As I say they both work fine in the 32bit XP Home on the netbook (yep I switched off the netbooks WIFI before running that test)

XP had that 802.1X authentication tab that requires Radius and the full enterprise Lan going on. You used to have to disable this to get Wifi to work on your simple netgear at home.

Windows 7 home does not present this tab. I get the feeling that 802.1X may be running in the background but Win 7 home is not presenting the UI to disable it

Whatever this is it's driving me loopy now silly

right I'm off to see if there is an 802.1X service I can switch off

Keep those suggestions coming

Life really is too short for <choose your own expletive> like this

Re: Anyone know the secret of getting a Wifi Dongle to work in Windows 7?

The dreaded Windows reinstall looms large

but you know what will happen after blowing away all those carefully installed motherboard drivers, printers and apps don't you biggrin

Looking for your advice should I go for it?

I hate being beaten by technology especially something as long in the tooth as wifi

maybe I should just pay out for homeplug and save my sanity biggrin

Re: Anyone know the secret of getting a Wifi Dongle to work in Windows 7?

You should really never need to re-install Windows. I mean, you know, i do not have your answer.

I have a great Linksys USB G adapter - originally purchased for Win XP - which really saved my bacon when the wireless card in a Win 7 laptop did not work. But then, when I wanted to use it in a second XP computer it just did not work.

If your computer is a laptop, take it to a store to buy a new adapter an test it in the store.

Hi Mitrichr

It's this beauty http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...29297_lastpage,yes#284917 now running 6 cores at nearly 3Ghz for 137 Watts at the socket. I did drag it all the way to Leeds from Brussels though

Vavega It's an ASUS Motherboard but no Kapersky (In my opinion an antivirus software that is probably worse than having a virus biggrin I'm an Avira Antivir fan) the dongle is enabled and good to go it broadcasts on 2.4Ghz and the receiving router gets the initial packets - the activity lights are in sync. Windows even prompts for the password - and I enter the right one

It's just.....it doesn't fulfill it's raison d'etre. d oh

I'm hoping it's next stop over might be Switzerland

Re: Anyone know the secret of getting a Wifi Dongle to work in Windows 7?

Hi marysduby

I'm currently of no fixed abode stopping over at my Sisters, I'm between jobs. Hopefully this afternoons interview will take me to Switzerland for at least 12 months.

The ethernet cable I type over at the mo trails across Sis's living room floor. She knows her big bruv's lifelong association with spaghetti cabling of all kinds

but...

Katy has been a wonderful Sister to me over the last year or so of trials and tribulations. It's just big bruv trying not to take liberties with his little Sis's hospitality. blushing

I'm off to get a homeplug set. When Microsoft release Service Pack 1 at the back end of this or early next year I'll have another look and see if they have fixed it.

I'd like to trial my "Global Thermometer" design but not at the expense of someone tripping and breaking a leg biggrin [I do worry sometimes about my sheer nerd tired ]

smile
Dave

Now enjoying Homeplug bliss

Install time 2 mins
