New Badges?

Is it time for some new badges, isn't it? I think it is! We have some longrunning projects on WCG, so why not enhance the current official line of badges! What about a badge for 3- and 4-year-computing on a single project? Name it as you want, but reaching sapphire after 2 years and computing further on a project gets no credit, thats a shame! Pls. enhance with a diamond and a platinum badge!
Sorry if this got eventually already attention somewhere else within the forum, maybe answered already. I searched for it but could not find, interesting to hear what other members think about it.

Cheers BV

I would hope the new badges will be for 5 and 10 years

I hope so too. Although I don't have any projects with more than 8 years yet...

Re: New Badges?

At this stage badges for 4/5 and 8/10 years would just be acknowledging what many already have, and not even come close to others. So if they ever do turn up I hope there is a useful structure to them; the system acknowledges people that presently have 100years and facilitates users that will quickly move to 1000years. We dont need a 3 month plan, we need a 3year+ plan:

With 16 core CPUs becoming available from AMD in 2011 and Intel expected to release mainstream 8 core HT CPUs within a year I would prefer the WCG was more proactive WRT new badges. A badge is not much of a target if you have already passed it.
In just 6 months one user with 3 sixteen core/thread systems could add 24years crunching time. So big numbers will not be exclusive to businesses, schools and uni's.

- Actually, I think Intel are planning a quad HT CPU with 8 cores; 32 threads = bronze in 18h, silver in a day and a half and gold just under 3 days.

Gone will be the days then, when it took ~ 3 months to get a Gold badge laughing

But a very valid question is: How many people have passed, say, the 10 year badge for every active project?
In just 6 months one user with 3 sixteen core/thread systems could add 24years crunching time.
So of the 527,368 current WCG members, how many are going to shell out $9k for three of these systems?

and a few, a very few crunchers will have the resources to take advantage of that. Why create a 1,000 year badge if one one user is going to reach it in the next 5 years?

Re: New Badges?

It would be nice if WCG could implement 5 and 10 year badges with the ability to increase the value of the 10yr badge in increments of 10 without requireing a new design each time. That would prevent such a large gap between the later badges which could discourage crunchers from trying to progress past the 10yr to the next level (100yr ?).

Perhaps WCG should recruit Mr. SNURK to help with the design for the new badges, he did such a fine job with his new forum signatures...

Try this lot for 10years per active project, well at least the 5 active projects that have been active for a few months :)

playlife 248:132:13:43:31

Then there is the next 50...

We dont know that one such system would cost $3K.
A year after release there might be as many 32 thread CPU users as i7 users now.

There's already 12 on the list with over 1000years in total:
clemsontiger, IBM and neu-innova have been crunching for less than 3years,
mediatemple, Dagda, MakeCuresHappen and Global Gossip have been crunching for less than 4years,

I think there is a fair chance several will reach 1000years for one badge within the next 5years.
