Re: HCC with GPU

The release date speculations stemmed from "I hope 2011, but if they make it by early 2012, that will let them run enough to determine all the bugs".
While it was wrong to read too much into that, it was wrong to suggest that all the bugs could be determined by any date. To mention early 2012 was not the wisest either.
All the bugs will not be identified let alone ironed out until some time after general release. Bugs turn up on mature CPU apps never mind immature GPU apps. On a GPU project bugs will continuously appear due to the reliance on GPU drivers (for which there are many updates, and betas every year).
Even when the app is released there is no guarantee that a new GPU would work with the app 'as is', so if anyone wants to speculate about a start date, think about this; would you want to start a GPU project just before the release of a new GPU generation? Yes there is always a new GPU on the horizon, but it's not always just over the hill. Even AMD's latest GPU's are only a few strong, and OpenCL on GCN might be a concern (well to get good app optimization and GPU utilization). Typically drivers and code are good for one generation over another, so who knows how many apps will actually be needed or used, but the fewer the app count the less optimized they will be, and the more bugs there will be overall.

Re: HCC with GPU

Skgiven, this is exactly why they anticipate an extended beta period. Alpha is for working out the most extreme bugs. This thing is still far far far away from production release. Beta in "early 2012" still seems quite reasonable to me. And this is all that has ever been mentioned from an authoritative source.

As for Sekerob's tilting at windmills, the January that keeps getting repeated is simply due to lack of reading comprehension and wishful thinking.

Sekerob, and others

We expect GPU-enabled Help Conquer Cancer to enter beta testing in the near future.

this is what said in Sept 2011 update pdf

Hello datahelp,
Right now we are in the end-of-year rush. We hope to run a Beta test early in 2012. Keep in mind that our initial GPU Beta test may not be nominal. We might discover major incompatibilities that did not show up on the few Alpha systems. This has happened to other projects. We are not immune, even though our hearts are pure.

Note to self: Think to make a CUDA short FAQ, summarizing all the scientists and WCG replies.

HCC, projected for implementation in 2010

this is said by Sekerob in 2009

To TimAndHedy and everyone else waiting for information on GPU:

You're right, we do like to keep things under wraps. We do that to give us some flexibility in managing our schedule. GPU is not the only new project that we are working on.

We gave the HCC researchers permission to mention that we are working on GPU knowing that it would let the cat out of the bag. So at least you have some information.

But now you're going to have to wait for us to finish the associated prep work.

We will never announce a start date unless we are sure that we can make the date that we announce.

At this time we are not prepared to give you a date for the start of GPU for HCC but we can tell you this:

1. At this time, the plan is to start Beta testing before the end of January, 2012. This may change as conditions arise.

2. Because of the large variety of processors, we will probably have a longer than average Beta test.

Thanks.

But, who said January?... no CA, no Admin, No Tech that I know off. Once again proving that misinformation is so hard to eradicate, no matter how often corrected.

Thanks for digging that out... a "plan" still differs substantially from a "promise". Plans I've made many when suddenly that never to be forgotten friend called Murphy pays another visit ... the "This may change as conditions arise." ;>)

Re: HCC with GPU

We all understand that conditions can and do change ... but once the cat is out of the bag and even as tentative as the "January" may have been meant ... January has come and gone with no update on status. I bet long before January ended it was know by the staff that the beta was not goping to happen in that timeframe. So this is where a little communication goes a long way and can stop some of the rampant ... January, January, January chants we hear (and participate in) from the peanut gallery. I'm not looking for a hard date but just a simple "we ran into some delays and will meet our hope to have a beta ready in January. At this time we are still working diligently to get the best application possible resady but you will ahve to be patient a bit longer" ... see, simple communication of a status update and no projection of a date that people can lean on.

Re: HCC with GPU

Responses like this and demands for status updates are precisely why they don't give predictions. One admin was kind enough to give an impression of a time frame this time. He will surely not make the mistake of communicating again and I wouldn't blame him at all.

Re: HCC with GPU

I can say with ABSOLUTE certainty, that the GPU BETA work will get here at the exact moment it arrives and not a second before. In the mean time there is plenty of good work to do and far more productive activities than having teenage angst/tantrums over approximate and variable schedules.

Hi, Dark Angel:

Your expression "teenage angst/tantrums" may be a tad harsh: I believe we all understand 'there is plenty of good work to do', but in 2012, it appears somewhat backward for the research applications not to use GPU processing to get the work done as quickly as possible and drugs/solutions provided for the objects of the research. I think we all would like to contribute more and many of us are standing by with cold GPUs at the ready.

Enjoy your weekend and ...the Lord bless you and keep you (Num 6:24).
