Hi. I have two machines running WCG. My XP (old) machine typically runs two tasks and has usually two queued up - as two finish, the other two begin and so on. I don't do anything to this and it has run itself admirably for some years now. My wife's machine (a third WCG outlet) also behaves itself quite well in the manner of my old XP.
My new Toshiba is a different matter. If I let it run itself, it can queue up to about 10 tasks and run them all at once, with the Toshiba fan going mental and the cpu all soaked up. What I do is suspend 8 of the tasks and let two run, which calms the universe down somewhat. However, I then forget to go back and resume the next two. Then, when I've done all the queued up tasks, with nothing sitting in the pipeline beyond the two that are running, BOINC shoves in another 10 and I only find out when I hear the Toshiba's fan going crazy again. This is not good for a long term satisfactory relationship. Can someone tell me how to limit the number of tasks coming in to 2 and the number of tasks running at any one time to 2? In other words, 2 running and 2 waiting to start, which are then replaced by another 2 and so on. Fiddling with the CPU % doesn't have any effect on this issue that I can see. TIA Hoges in WA |

How many cores or threads does the Toshiba have? Is it actually running all 10 units at once? If so, you can restrict the number of cores/threads in the BOINC manager so that you don't use them all. You can also restrict how much of the processor time gets used which also reduces the heat and therefore the fan wont go as crazy.
----------------------------------------Edit: Are your older machines desktops and the newer on a laptop? Laptops don't circulate air as much and will run hotter. Also, each laptop vents a little different and may be why it strains more. I would suggest reducing the amount of processing time BOINC is allowed to keep from burning it up. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Nov 30, 2010 12:23:58 PM] |

He also didn't say how much he fiddled... I know I gotta drop a couple of my laptops down to 60% in order to see a difference. Just a suggestion.

Well, It's a riddle how a Tosh runs 10 tasks at once, so suspect there's some serious confusion in play and likely the Activity Menu option "Run based on preferences" is not selected. Also suspect a Local versus Website device settings conflict, the usual "Clear those local prefs", most often removing half or all of the problem.
----------------------------------------Anyway, let's start with a copy/paste of the start up message log, some 30 lines so we can see the effective settings, what I'm known to ask soon into a problem resolution Q&A :D got to run...

Hi again. I'm a bit more than a bit lost by the replies - out of my experience level I'm afraid.
Anyways, I have a screen shot of what it's trying to do now. I let the last two tasks finish, then "Resume" d the next remaining two and the list filled with another 11 making 13 in all. Not instantly but over a few minutes. Not all run immediately, some say "Waiting for memory" but they kind of flip-flop between starting and stopping. I looked at the run on preferences thing and it has a dot next to it. However, clicking on it doesn't change it either on or off. The Toshiba laptop I'm currently on has 8g of memory if that makes a difference (way more than my XP machine) Do you guys want me to do anything? If you do, best keep it quite simple. thanks again Hoges in WA |

Open Boinc Manager (in advanced view). Click on the Messasges Tab. Select the first 30 lines, click copy and paste them in this thread.
----------------------------------------You might just need to do this, On the Boinc Manager drop down menue, click Advanced, Preferences, network usage, and change the additional work buffer (cache) to 0.5 days. On the Processor Tab of the Advanced Preferences window, set the amount of processor to use to 99% I would guess you are running other prjects as well as WCG (perhaps 4 WCG, 4 Free Hal, a WU Prop task and a GPU task)? If you post your first 30 line people here would know. [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Nov 30, 2010 2:43:16 PM] |
