70 years!

I haven't built a system in awhile but I believe the best way ( point per cost, points per watts, reliability, etc) is to get the cheapest, latest I7, a good rated but dirt cheap non -overclocking motherboard, a $25 high rated cooler, the cheapest HDD that comes up on new egg with a decent rating; a cheap 300 watt PS; base speed memory. Snap it together in an old case, a $20 case, or go case-less; load up Linux Ubuntu or Mint, load BOINC, load TeamViewer and control it from another computer (no monitor, keyboard, mouse or other attachment; If you don't have a spare Ethernet connection, buy a cheap USB wireless dongle. Turn it on, check it once a week and let it crunch.

If you watch for sales you should be able to put this all together for under $500 and enjoy 5-7 years of 6000 PPD. If you want the option to add a GPU if we ever get an enabled project again, get a 400 watt PS and be ready to drop in a mid range gpu optimized for the new project.

Put it out of the way in a basement or cool place in the summer and move it to a place you want to keep cozy in the winter.

So far I'm holding steady in my rating but if/when I start slipping, that's my standing plan.

Everytime I cost out server CPUs and boards and the required ECC registered memory, it ends up costing a lot more. But that's not to say that I might someday splurge and set up a 32 core monster. It's still gotta be fun
