Does anyone have a surge protector that they trust enough to keep their rigs running during thunderstorms?
----------------------------------------A string of thunderstorms is coming through here now, and my crunching machines are shut down. (I'm typing this on a laptop running on battery.) We're likely to get a lot of this weather over the next few weeks. It's frustrating to have to shut down crunching so much of the time. However ... at the moment I am feeling very, very grateful to have Iowa's weather and natural phenomena to deal with. We may get thunderstorms, blizzards, tornadoes, floods, and slight earthquakes, but we will never have a tsunami. Continuing to send caring thoughts to the people of Japan. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by kateiacy at Mar 20, 2011 2:07:26 PM] |

Yes, a 200,000 joules one with 6 switched + 2 permanent powered for the AVS. The UPSses have 70,000 joules and a feed through for Ethernet, but since wireless, it's not used.
We have thunderstorms always coming from exactly north across the Adriatic that can last hours, the dangerous ones are though that barrel in through the valley from the West... we had several direct hits last year and nothing buckled. We have no season for this ''phenomena''... they can come in 365 days of the year since we're on a cross point of constant cold and warm layers moving in opposite direction. Temps can drop here easily by 25C within hours and bounce back... depends on what uncle Muammar pushes our way from the Sahara, just across the med ;>) --//-- |

Kate, you may want to look at Belkin; arguably one of the industry leaders in power strip type surge protection. Not cheap but very heavy duty. They have many models and are readily available from Newegg, Tiger Direct or Amazon.
----------------------------------------I prefer a UPS but they are expensive, bulky and usually require maintence every 2-3 years (battery). Cheers ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yes, Belkin and Trust are kind of the wholesale suppliers of this equipment over here. Watch for sales. Last I had to buy a replacement battery for an APC which was 35 Euro including couriering it from Milan. Extended the life another 7 years. Deep de-charging is what keeps them alive as else they develop bridges and their run time gets shorter and shorter. Seen a lab guy actually reviving the accumulators, even non-rechargable batteries, but not advisable for the layman... requires to apply a little excess power to burn those bridges, literally.

I live at the tail end of a rural elcectric co-operative. Severe voltage spikes and dips are a weekly occurance. The local line crew once sent 12.47 kv through my house which fried everything not on one of my APC UPSes. APC XS1000 for my main crunchers.

kateiacy, I would suggest surge strips (the $10 multi-plug extentions) and a good PSU. Deltavee may need some heavy duty kit, but most people find UPS equipment to be expensive to buy, power hungry, and a pain to setup. Corsair make good PSU's; most can handle peaks and dips, shutdown safely and some have a 10year warranty and come with extras such as spare fuses.

Thanks to all who have responded! I have power-strip surge protectors, but at the very least I need to investigate better-quality ones of those. I'll also do more research on PSUs before building my next crunching machine (which I hope to do around the end of this year after the dust has settled a bit with respect to Bulldozer, Sandy Bridge, etc.)

The power strip models should save you from the normal voltage spikes, but a good UPS will save you from all but the worst hits. To the best of my knowledge nothing will save your systems from a direct lightning hit. You should be pretty safe from most storms, but depending on their intensity I would err on the side of total disconnecting for the severe ones. Cheers
