How long does it take

This has probably been asked before, and if so I am sorry for repeating it, but could someone please tell me how long it is expected for a task to run. My current one - the first I have downloaded - has been running for 2 1/2 hours and is 15% complete.

Also could I ask whether it is safe to leave it running when I go out, I am thinking that this will speed things up.

I am sorry if these questions sound dumb, but I am not really computer literate

Re: How long does it take

Hi

There are a few variables here.

Firstly, how fast a unit processes depends on your cpu speed.
Also, the units vary greatly in size.....on a 2 ghz machine for example....a unit time could vary between 4 and 40 hours...depending on the unit size.

If your system is rock solid stability wise leaving it on should not be an issue...I leave all my rigs on 24/7.

Just keep an eye on your temps/voltages and check they are ok.

Post system specs etc if you would like further assistance.

Re: How long does it take

Peter --
The work units vary in size quite a bit. I have seen some as short as about four hours and others as long as three and a half days in length. Like Viao, I run both of my systems 24/7 and have been doing so since back in mid-November when the WCG was first announced.

Your new team mate,

Re: How long does it take

Hi Peter,

Tasks known as Work Units vary greatly in length (can't recall all the reasons) and completion time also depends on a number of variables of the machine you are running the WCG on.

If you have 15% after 2.5hours, looks like it will take just over 16.5 hours to complete .. whilst it may sound alot some recent WUs have been taking a good few days to complete! .. so the 16.5hours or so is a luxury for some of us ..

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think there is a 3 week time limit on WUs .. if you don't get a completed WU back by then, although you will earn points for the CPU time, you will not get anything on the results side ..

As for leaving it running .. some of us crunching addicts have machines running 24/7 .. if you have broadband and the machine is always online, the Agent will complete the WU, send the info back to the WCG server, download the next WU and carry on. If you are not connected permanantly, you will need to send the result manually when the WU is complete (connect to internet, double click on the WCG icon & then OK the next message box) ..

Hope this helps ..

Re: How long does it take

.......when you are out and other processes are idle WCG will run appreciably faster methinks.

I know Folding certainly does.

Re: How long does it take

Thaks all for you info. As I said I being new I am feeling my way at the moment, but I am sure I will be OK, given the help I have received so far.

My specs are (I hope this is right), Windows XP with SP2, HP Pavillion, Intel Pentium 4 2.93Ghz processor, 512Mb Ram, and yes I am on broadband which is always on in the background,

I currently have 3hrs 30 and 23%.

Thanks again.

Re: How long does it take

My guess is that you are running at stock speed....no overclocking.
Therefore 24/7 use shouldn't present any issues.

From one WCG noob to another.......welcome aboard smile

Peter2005

It looks to me that your installation and progress is entirely normal and to be expected. It is difficult for anyone to say if it is safe for you to run your computer while you are out. Many of us leave all our machines on all the time with no ill effects. I leave home for days with all of them running.

My suggestion is that you leave it on while you are home until you are comfortable that it is safe to go off and leave it running.

Welcome to the WCG; it is a great cause and welcome to the boards.

Regards
