Social Network: de-geek/game posted blurb

I was talking with my buddies the other day and they told me I play a lot of GAMES on facebook. When I inquired more I found out that they thought wcgrid.org was a game I'm playing.

here's what is posted to my Facebook and Twitter:
Earned 3120688 points (#15035) and 5970 results (#10932) by donating over 5 years (#12246) of computer time to World Community Grid http://wcgrid.org/

From a marketing perspective - let's de-game this message and attract more users. You know those people who spend a lot of time doing nothing on their computers that aren't even coming close to taxing their quad core CPU with 4+GB of ram.

Maybe we can put a message on here like
Earned 1234567 points this month from wcgrid.org by donating spare CPU cycles to solve real health problems today! Install it and help everyone at wcgrid.org

Sounds good to me!

"Earned 3120688 points (#15035) and 5970 results (#10932) by donating over 5 years (#12246)," does sound a bit like you were playing an arcade game.

This may be as much a Berkeley issue as a WCG issue as a thick buddy issue.

Re: Social Network: de-geek/game posted blurb

I have had the same experience with people thinking it was a game. I had to actually change my settings for it to report because some people thought it was like spamming their feeds like many other irrelevant apps. It has however gotten more people to ask me about it then any other method I have tried, so it is somewhat working. I just think it could be more clear. Nice suggestion.

I think, contributed 5756823 Cobblestones to World Community Grid would be better than 5756824 Boinc Credits or 40297768 WCG Points.

Re: Social Network: de-geek/game posted blurb

I don't think most people will understand Cobblestones either. There are some pretty weird games out there and it would still cause confusion. I like the part of adding "by donating spare CPU cycles to solve real health problems" to the end of the announcement. Though many non-computer geeks may still be confused by the term CPU cycle, it does clarify that it is not a game.

Yeah, Cobblestones is a nerd term, but CPU cycle is not de-geeked.

As for "by donating spare CPU cycles to solve real health problems", I would like for this to be true, but I would also like for it to be proven before flying the banner.

Re: Social Network: de-geek/game posted blurb

I'm a 30-days newbie. What caught my attention was a comment on a news article about enviromental damage due to nuclear energy. Someone just posted "if you are concerned about the enviroment, do something about it" then referred to the Clean Energy Project at Harvard.edu and told readers to run the tutorial.
Cut to the chase, no games.
Also, the phrase "contributed to _____" and the hours achieved towards "advancing global health" makes it clear that it is serious. WCG is just one of several .org's for computing volenteers, but it offers managable computing that doesn't fry your computor.
I think that the published work that has been completed is valid enough to be considered a contribution. Sometimes the Nobel Prize takes years to win!
