I imagine WCG and/or the Research Projects will be able to benefit from the announcement by Google that they will be donating a billion core hours to research.

It will be fantastic if part of this huge power be applied on WCG efforts.

I Imagine too. Hope that happens.

After read it;
----------------------------------------"Proposals that are ideal for Google Exacycle include, but are not limited to, research projects like Folding@Home, Rosetta@Home, various BOINC projects, and grid parameter sweeps. Other examples include large-scale genomic search and alignment, protein family modeling and sky survey image analysis." I guess that if WCG get involved with some actual (or future) project, and be in contact with google to participate, have real chances to capture at least part of this huge computational power !

woohoo !
Google delay years to participate in grid computing in general, but now when decides to entry is to be the huge one sponsor ! Can you imagine the Petaflops computational power behind of this a billion core hours donation to researches ? Terrific ! |

Hmmm - how does this compare to what we all are contributing to research through World Community Grid right now:
----------------------------------------Average of 353 years/day = 3,092,280 hours/day 365 days/year * 3,092,280 hours/day = 1,128,682,200 1.1 Billion Core Hours/year!!!!!!!! Its good to see more people get involved. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by The Aspens at Apr 22, 2011 1:11:10 PM] |

For WCG, only the HCC project applies as it is the only written in C++.Too bad...

Google may be harboring the idea of creating its own community grid with the 1-billion core-hours donation just to try the ropes.

I read that Google candidates need have availability to work " on a flexible schedule (part-time or on a semester schedule) for up to one year ". It could indicate that Google targets are projects with estimative timelife around one year. It is good information to compare with WCG data above. But if we consider all work and time processed in WCG until now, by far we are among the largest ones in the history. I hope that World Community Grid board get involved with Google board to make an alliance, and bring us some new project to capture at least part of this Google apparatus. |

Why did they word it like a donation of a specific number of hours?
----------------------------------------Is it something like the first year is free and subsequent hours will be expensive? ![]() ![]() |
