I notice that when I run one task at a time I can run it in about half the time. The first method described here is (1) By simply suspending all tasks on my plate except for one.
----------------------------------------I can also run two at a time, but it takes almost twice as long. The computer has one CPU plus the virtual cpu from the hyperthread feature, but I'm a little confused with the various ways I can use to run just one task at a time. (2) If I select under the baoinc manager's preferences to use 50% of the microprocessors 100%of the cpu time, then it only runs one task at a time. The same thing happens if (3) I choose to disable Hyperthreading in Bios during startup and then select 100%of microprocessors 100% of the CPU time. When I do this then it still only runs one task at a time. (4) Then there are additional similar settings on the WCG site, where I can set my computer's preferences for how many CPUs, device profiles for home, work, etc. How should I set my settings, and which ones, so that my computer can run only one task, but run it at top speed? Is the task manager accurate in telling me that only 50% of cpu is used? Most of the rest appears to be 'idle process'. In other words, how can I force my computer to use more than just 50% (according to the task manager) on one task alone? Is there a setting which could, for example, say something like 155% of my cpu is in use on one task at a time? (for example 99% from the cpu and 56%from hyperthreading). If the task manager is not really accurate and what it's trying to say is that 50% is the full cpu and the other 50% is hyperthreading, then why does it say 'idle process' ? Why doesn't it say 'hyperthreading boinc task'? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by z2000 at May 14, 2011 4:52:17 AM] |

running 2 wu's will result in each wu's taking longer to compete because they both share a FP unit and 50% cpu usage = 1 core being used on a 2 core cpu or 100% of one core and WCG isn't miltithreaded so can't use more than 1 core per wu

Disable hyperthreading
----------------------------------------But keep in mind that even thought HT is slower the output will be larger with HT on. AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

Hello z2000,
Don't disable hyperthreading. It speeds up the OS. Instead, set BOINC to only run 1 task. If you run 2 tasks simultaneously, you will probably increase total throughput by about 15% per day, but your computer will be slow and unresponsive while you use it yourself. Lawrence |

Disable hyperthreading Do Not Disable Hyperthreading!Although one single task will return faster, overall using HT increases the work you do. |

Ok, on the computer that I use the most I will limit 1 processor through the device profile. I called this profile the 'home' profile, and the other computers will use the 'default' profile. These are the settings set at the WCG site.
----------------------------------------I see two fields available to fill out though, for my device profile called 'home': On multiprocessors, at most use: ____ processors On multiprocessors, use: ____% of processors I put '1' on the first field, to use 1 processor, and now I will find out if leaving 100% on the second field will still allow only one task at a time. ![]() |

That didn't work. It's running two. Let me put '1' processor, and also '50%' of processors underneath it.

It's not working, why?
----------------------------------------I paused the project, then clicked 'update' and then resumed, and still two tasks running. The dvice profile here at the WCG site now reads use '1' processor and use '50%' of processors. The Boinc manager is set to 'run always'. __________________________________________________________ update: Ok it seems that the local preferences are very powerful, or else I'm confused about what 'run a'ways' means. It says that if I don't 'run always' it will run based on my references, but I didn't know if it means my device profile settings here at WCG or my local Boinc manager preferences, so I selected 'use 50% of processors' in the Boinc manager preferences, and now it's running one task. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by z2000 at May 14, 2011 11:02:12 PM] |

Hello z2000,
Please post the first page of the Messages tab, which describes your system. Does it say that it is using the profile from the we site? Lawrence |
