Re: no freedom of speech among academic people

A vast majority of US academia is so far to the left they have fallen off the planet and out of touch with reality. Their self serving agenda is to promote their agenda no matter what the cost. Any and all conservative debate is quickly quelched and you're labeled a (right) wingnut. All you have to look at is where this country has gone under the current uber liberal administration. I'm sure our founding fathers are rolling in their graves.

They are Socialist/Communist out to destroy this country

I humbly disagree with this sentiment.

Socialists/Communists/Progressives/Democrats in their current stand= all the same. It's all about turning the US into a welfare state and redistributing the wealth.

Re: no freedom of speech among academic people

Then there is the whimsical influence of politicians, who determine governmental grant aid to research teams. Scientists can't exactly express a political opinion or they will lose out on the next grant. If a scientist expresses concern over a factory continually poisoning a river that comes back on the politicians that funded and approved the factory. The same politicians that determine who gets what grant.

I will have to disagree with this statement at least provisionally. A few years ago I was on a NSF panel to evaluate grant proposals. We rejected about half of them. The rest were ranked in order. There was no political input. (I did find it interesting at the number of times people read the same proposal and came to different conclusions.)

Politicians can influence grants but generally by "earmarking" or funding a specific grant as part of a bill. It is rather rare that a politician can block a grant. The ones that try to block a grant usually do so for the publicity and usually fail. They can influence the amount of money that is available for all grants.

nanoprobe, you nailed it and are spot on. I can and will later do that and prove it. It's not just Harvard or the University of Wisconsin. Living in Colorado, I can also add The University of Colorado in Boulder in that list as well. They do not reflect the "every day man or woman". Coloradoans are different from some/many citizens of other states as we are not politically correct. What you see is what you get. The truth may be painful in that regards, yet you know what to expect. That is why my Family moved here before Colorado became a State; from the East where they held jobs as clerks in stores and such. They decided to start their own business and became Ranchers, Farmers, Gold and Silver workers (and then started their own). This is what many folks did from other Stats as well. Kind of like that "Atlas Shrugged" novel by Ayn Rand. Nothing comes for free (mostly). You have to earn it.

And yes, Thomas Jefferson and other Founding Fathers *are* rolling in their graves. 'tis time to rediscover the Constitution, The Articles of Confederation and The Federalist Papers.

Those last two preceded the Constitution. A must read. Well, it was in my Political Science classes. I must say that Poly Sci was not a major money maker for me. laughing

Yet, I did learn quite a bit. wink

Re: no freedom of speech among academic people

Here is just another perfect example of our sodem president.

0BAMA TO END RUN CONGRESS: Debt Ceiling Unconstitutional???
In an effort to further his socialist agenda, 0bama is now exploring his options to ignore congress on the Debt Ceiling issue, and start borrowing again....

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/07/03/co...rnal+-+Politics+-+Text%29

Maybe congress should just go home permanently, since 0bama apparently doesn't need them anymore to further his borrow/tax and spend agenda.

Will massive tax hikes by Executive Order be next???
Mandatory wealth re-distribution??
Or property confiscation?
Or gun confiscation?

For all of you who voted for him, I'll keep my guns, my God and my money. You can keep the change.
God help us all if he gets reelected. We'll be well on the road to becoming a third world country with nothing left for our children/grandchildren but massive debt that can't possibly be repaid.

Re: no freedom of speech among academic people

smile Thank you, Lawrence.
I didn't know I did. biggrin

Freedom of Speech
is in my opinion
- if I can say so without entering oxymoron world -
too important and too precious to be politized.

And I do look forward to more input on this important matter as well from academia
(interesting input about "manipulating" medical research)
as from the layman's world.
- I don't know whether Fox News ever showed "The Bomb in the Turban" cartoon
I know very few American media did and indeed most media in the entire world preferred mum ....
Am I nursing the very sparks now, Lawrence?

Good one, Lawrence! biggrin

Tough to go against a little mermaid! laughing

Basically what some folks are saying here is about various Universities (internationally as well) use of so-called *speech code* which resrticts students rights to free speech.

Kinda crazy when certain Professors can go nuts and spout off outrageous statement in classes or anywhere on campus with impunity! That is really bad news. wink

Here is a real example about students:

----------------

While over the years we at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) have dealt with hundreds of examples of universities violating student rights (check to see if your school is one of them), the following 12 colleges have distinguished themselves for showing particular hostility to freedom of speech. Some schools have earned this distinction by refusing to undo punishments of students and faculty for their free speech, others by engaging in ongoing campaigns against student speech, and one for regulating student speech to the hilt. Private religious colleges like DePaul make the list because they promise free speech but fail to deliver time and time again. (As for schools like Liberty University and Brigham Young we explain our position here.) Is your college censoring speech, too? If so, let others know in the comments section.
