I have started having a problem with BOINC Manager losing the display normally shown. The PC is a laptop running 7/24 and uses Windows XP. The system is set up to use 100% of processors 80% of the time - I just changed it to 70% of the time.. Several things mentioned in this thread I know nothing about are LAIM and TThrottle. What is LAIM and where do I get TThrottle?
I haven't said it yet, but the only I am running now is DSFL. In addition, if I reboot, everything seems to run fine. I am also going to shut down BOINC manager in between examining the status of WUs which are running. Will this cause a problem transferring the results or the reporting of tasks completed? |

I am also going to shut down BOINC manager in between examining the status of WUs which are running. Will this cause a problem transferring the results or the reporting of tasks completed? No problem at all. As its name says, you only need BOINC Manager when you want to do some BOINC management or when you wish to check that everything is OK there. In between you can close it (e.g. with Ctrl-W) and that will save CPU cycles for useful crunching. ![]() LAIM (Leave Application In Memory) tells BOINC to simply pause a WU when it has to suspend it, so this WU will simply resume to the next instruction when its turn comes back. Otherwise (with LAIM unchecked) BOINC ends the processing of the WU and it will have to restart from the latest checkpoint when its turn comes back. |

Thanks for the info about LAIM - I have it checked in the memory usage section of the preferences. I also updated my device profiles to say yes for LAIM (they were set to no).
I also asked about TThrottle and I still don't know where that is. When I got onto the laptop this morning I had a condition that said Windows XP was stopped to prevent any damage and a dump was taken. I have started to see this more frequently - I don't think I saw it at all until I started doing crunching for DSFL. |

6.12.33 (both 32 and 64 bit) I am running BOINC 6.10.56... What am I missing by not moving to 6.12.33? |

Thanks Falconet. I got it and am installing. I had some confusion as what value to use (F or C) but I think I figured it out. I have the core temps hanging right around 160 F and the GPU is right around 150 F. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 17, 2011 12:34:32 AM] |

My latest resent DSfL WU got stuck last night. Luckily I checked this morning, and rebooted the Win7 laptop.

first, there is little use in reporting a problem when there's no detail of the circumstances i.e. armstrdj wanted to know e.g. if the BOINC throttle (the CPU time % feature) was in use. Raul from his efforts seems to confirm it's indeed the continuous stop/go function that's part if not all of the problem.
You're missing nothing... 6.10.58 is fine too, but if the reports are an indication, a step up to above 6.12.41, (not 6.13!) might be called for at a later date when testing is complete. Since 6.12.41 still has the "http error 0" issue (introduced in 6.12.34), I'd wait and see. As for TThrottle (short for Temperature Throttle), the tool has been featured on the Start Here FAQ index for longer :D. Don't know why folk are afraid of doing the RTFM ... probably increased the fear of breaking something one would not have known about to do without reading ;>) , but the C and F value to use can be changed in the temperature read out tab and will instantly convert all values and field labels when changing the selection... in fact, if you're told 70C, just change the selection, enter that value, then choose F and it will instantly convert it to 158 F: ![]() So far, my soup box session, out in the desert :P --//-- |

Thanks SekeRob. I installed TThrottle and, with the temperature values I specified, the system stayed up all night. I will have to wait (forever I hope) for the problem I was having to recur. The only question I have is what are the two temperature readings? They both seem to change but I can't tell if it's min/max or something else. I would appreciate any help you can provide since I couldn't find the answer in the eFMer TThrottle Manual.

Don't know, but suspect the left column is the temp the program sets dynamically to get to a mean ceiling as per the setting and the right column of the pair reading out the actual temps to which the left value responds. For the exact answer you'd have to ask Fred, the developer.
