On another note...
----------------------------------------Anyone Boincing on an AMD 6870? Curious as to what it would compare to from NV. Mostly for WCG HCC or GPUGrid. Other project comparisons would be helpful as well. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 26, 2012 8:58:05 AM] |

The first post in this thread ( https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,34055 ) gives a good idea of how most cards compare to each other for HCC GPU.

It doesn't seem to break down the AMD GPUs very well. Do the 5800 series really do that much better than the 6800s? How does 5850 compare to 5870 as there seems to be a pretty good price difference? AMD is very confusing.

Yes, very confusing with their numbering. There doesn't seem to be a consolidated listing of each card within a series because the client doesn't seem to report them any more distinctly than by their series. You would have to skim through the different threads talking about GPU performance in both the HCC and GPU Support areas.

Will have to look around. My 460 lags way behind my 570's and even my 465.
Saw this 5770 at NewEgg for less than $100. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129268 |

Just pulled the trigger on a 7870 hope it performs as well as the link that RJ posted earlier. I feel bad about not going EVGA :( but the compute gain/price was something I could not pass up. This 1 card should outperform my 465 and 460 combined. Anyone been able to run AMD and NVidia on the same system?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150605 If it does as well as I hope, I may be able to squeeze the funds for another but I'm not holding my breath until that becomes a possibility. ![]() |

It makes sense to have some variety in your stable. Last week I put together a couple of new builds with AMD products. Got an FX-4100 quad core and a Sapphire 7870 GHz OC on an MSI mATX board, and an FX-8350 octo core and an XFX 7970 GHz DD on a Gigabyte mATX board. Those two cards running HCC GPU just boosted my daily points production by a little more than 1,000,000.
----------------------------------------I suggest trying to run 6 or 8 units on the 7870 at a time for best results. See the HCC and GPU Support areas for lots of discussions on app_info files. WCG is a bit weird because of it being a bunch of sub-projects. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 1, 2012 2:31:33 PM] |

TY, RJ.
I am a virgin ATI/AMD GPUer. Just wondering if the same app_info stuff would benefit my gtx570s. Have you tried it? BTW, you are rocking the WCG House here! Way to go ![]() |

You might be able to use the app_info on the 570, but you have to really watch the CPU usage. nVidia cards keep a full CPU core busy during the entire run, whereas the AMD one only use the whole core at the start and end of the run and a little use in between. I am running the app_info to get 2 units on each GPU for 3 580 SC Black-Ops and 2 590 Classified HCs (2x2GPUs). I'm only a week into the AMD world myself, but it's not that big a deal to learn. Just make sure you only install the bare minimum of the AMD driver if you don't need the other add-ons. I just have the basic driver and the SDK thing, not the 3 or 4 other optional things.
Thanks. The new GPU app got me over here looking and I haven't looked back yet. It was also a surprise to me that the HCC stuff is all being done within an hour drive from my house. |

That's too cool about the research being so close :)
----------------------------------------I've heard and visited the support area and it seems that GPU performance in HCC1 is influenced in a big way by the CPU clocks and abilities. I'm currently running my 570's on an evga classified with a 990X @4.4g. That explains why my 570's are matching the 580's in the list (actually a tad better). I'd love to give the .5 (2 per) app_info.xml a shot as I don't think my run time/WU would drop any based on my Precision graphs of GPU useage while running 1 per. I can't find it (the xml file) on the machine though :( Is it something I have to create myself? The support area seems directed toward folks much more adept to the BOINC and WCG intricacies :(. The amd7870 stuff has me really pumped as it's going into a 980X at 4.0 ish. There seems to be a concensus that my EVGA465 can run with this card also. That would be killer for our team advancement for WCG :) Edit: got some help for personal/work issues and am at a point where working some OT (and actual 40 hr weeks) are happenning again. Amazing how silly projects for no personal gain can sustain you when you'd otherwise give up. I'll be going in for my 1st saturday overtime in 6 or 7 months tonite :) If the 7870 works as well as reported, I'll have my 2nd in 3 weeks. It feels so good to be excited again... about anything.
