Here is a link to a new super computer that could probably do more results than all the members of wcg and only cost 1.4 million dollars http://www.eng.vt.edu/news/virginia-tech-s-wu...rful-supercomputer-masses. Marist college leads wcg in all categories and has 7820 devices. Even at the extremely low price of $500 a device that is $3,910,000 for those devices alone. So I am sure that all the devices that are being used for wcg would amount to over a billion dollars. At the new low cost for a super computer which will probably go lower in the future, there will be a time in the very near future when IBM will decide that it is cheaper to buy a super computer than it is to buy all the servers and pay for all the broadband it needs today. Remember that a computer under IBM's control would not need to do each result at least twice so that super computer could be only a half as powerful as all of wcg and still produce the same number of unique results.

The power of this supercomputer is based on GPUs. WCG devices crunch with CPUs.
----------------------------------------Imagine now all the devices running on WCG with GPUs. You cannot compare apples (CPU) and oranges (GPU). ![]() ![]() |

first, IBM has very little to do with the results, they are providing the servers to distribute wu and passing the results back. Any "hits" will still need to be verified |

Rather than think of one as possibly supplanting the other, think of one as definitely complementing the other. More to the point: WCG may use several of those supercomputers to add to its roster of nodes. Mathematically, that would be: WCGpower = WCGcruncherPower + N*supercomputer. Where N is greater than or equal to 1. Apples or oranges? No, apples and oranges !

I remember Watson and how they want computers to help doctors.

Would be wonderful to be able to play with such hardware.
----------------------------------------btw, Marist College doesn't lead in ANY category according to the WCG stats pages. ![]() Currently being moderated under false pretences |

Even if we compare "corporation posing as an individual" type members
----------------------------------------http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewStatsByMemberY.do?sort=points Marist isn't no1 in everything, and at that rate won't be holding the rest for too much longer. ![]() Currently being moderated under false pretences |
