Re: Strange crunching

Why would they make us crunch the same workunits again?

I heard that SETI did so to keep its audience.

That IS true Seti DID do that back before Boinc was around and then again when they had problems with the telescope data from Arecibo, they then caught HOLY HECK for it and lost ALOT of crunchers as a result!! They also lost ALOT of money from people that asked for their money back and refused to give any more! I am not sure ANY project would try that again without a prior warning of what is going on.

I am PERSONALLY one of those that left Seti and will NOT go back AND am one that asked for, and got, some of my money back! I was also ready to donate more money but that is all now water under the bridge! Suffice it to say I do not believe, but have no way of knowing, that WCG would reissue the same workunits over and over and over again just because.

Re: Strange crunching

When a project temporarily runs out of work units, your computer automatically switches over to other WCG projects unless you have set your preferences to only run certain projects. So there is a good reason not to issue work units that we have already crunched. There is always a lot of work that needs crunching, just not in every project. A search will quickly locate many posts where people note (or complain) that a particular project has temporarily stopped sending work units.

WOW!!! I saw this thread and thought I would see what it is all about. After reading all the posts, it really provided a humorous interlude.

Re: Strange crunching

I think you are probably seeing the effects of two recent events. The first was a few months ago, when we added a large batch of data to the HCC project, causing the percent-complete statistic to drop.

The second, more recently, was a malfunction in one of our compute clusters that slowed down our processing of HCC results and the generation of new work units. To help us get through this period without running dry, the World Community Grid reduced our project's share of compute time by a 4x factor.

Although our systems are back in shape and we have resumed full processing speed on WCGrid, the statistics may lag a little.

No doubt we will see a nice steep jump in the percentage graph once HCC on GPU goes beta, and proceeds to the full run.

We have no interest in re-processing the same units, or wasting CPU cycles that could go to other projects.

Re: Strange crunching

Hi Lawrence,

Your example of other projects stopping their flow of work units is precisely what happened here. We had to pause while we fixed a hardware problem. Our server and WCGrid servers had enough units remaining that the members never ran out, though the flow was reduced. Consequently, the percentage-complete statistic did not move much during this time.

Of course you don't want to waste resources and the implication that you might is just wrong. Thank you, Christian.

Re: Strange crunching

One of the really good things about WCG, is the interaction we have with the actual scientists who we're crunching WU's for.

So, thank you Christian for clearing up any uncertainties that there may have been.
