smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 56 smilesmile

Welcome to the World Community Grid team thread for MyOnlineTeam! We would love to have you as a member!

What are we?

MyOnlineTeam is a global group of people who believe that individuals can make a real difference in the world. Our main focus is on distributed computing where we use the idle computing power of our PCs to process data for a number of research projects. We use the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) software to do this. This is a safe and reliable way to make a difference in the world. Most people do well to utilize more than five percent of the computing power of their PCs. With BOINC, the other ninety-five percent that is "going to waste" gets used without impacting your normal computer use. In return, you will help with efforts to find new medicines, treatments and cures for diseases like cancer, HIV, malaria and muscular dystrophy, expand our understanding of our environment and climate, help make new discoveries about our universe, and much more, all while getting to know folks from all over the world, from different cultures and backgrounds and a wide variety of viewpoints. MyOnlineTeam is also involved in global micro-finance thru Kiva.org. Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend to unique entrepreneurs around the globe.

The best part of all of this is that you choose how much you want to get involved. You can get involved in any one of the multiple projects in which we participate when you want as much as you want.

Who are we?

Our members are from all over the world and come from diverse backgrounds. With MyOnlineTeam, you will find you have friends from all over the world. We know what it is like to lose a loved one to disease. We understand what it is like to look up at the sky and ponder the great questions facing mankind. We all feel the desire to make a difference. We will do our best to ensure that you are glad you found us!

Being a global group and a diverse one at that, you will find that each of us can have very different views. Because we are so different, you will find that we are all about respect, tolerance and diversity. We know that while we are so different, we are very much the same - we are here to make a difference and it is that work that truly matters.

Our history:

MyOnlineTeam was founded on November 16th, 2004 when the World Community Grid project first launched. We have been growing ever since. While the World Community Grid is our birthplace and remains our primary home and project, we have expanded into other projects in line with our overall mission. If you want to crunch only one project, such as WCG, or multiple projects, we're a team where you can do both, all with the same team.

Where to begin:

Since you are reading this, you have most likely already created an account here at the World Community Grid and downloaded the BOINC program. If not, just click on the Home link above. To see who all of us are and to join MyOnlineTeam here at WCG, just click here: JOIN MyOnlineTeam! To participate with us in our other projects, simply go to the BOINC program and click on Tools - Attach to project. When you attach to a project for the first time, you will also create an account there. We recommend that you use the same username and e-mail address that you did here at World Community Grid. To attach to a project, enter the correspoding URL for it from the list below in field provided for that.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 56 smilesmile

As we begin our new team thread, we offer the following as guidelines to assist you in ensuring that your posts in our thread are not problematic:

1) Most importantly, be familiar with Forum Policy for Members. These are WCG's forum rules.

2) Keep topics unrelated to the thread's primary purpose brief to avoid becoming a distraction. Extended discussion can be taken off-line or moved to the Chat forum.

3) If a specific post elicits a strong emotional reaction, wait before posting a response. A quick response is likely to be problematic.

4) Remember that we are a global team and those posting here are not necessarily posting in their first language. Give folks the benefit of the doubt.

5) Be aware that your posts are limited to the written word. The reader has no knowledge of your frame of mind, facial expressions or tone of voice. With just your words to go on, it is much easier for them to be misunderstood or misinterpreted by the reader.

6) You are posting in a public venue. If there is a problem with your post and you are asked to modify or remove it, please do so. It is not an accusation regarding your intent.

7) If the team captain requests that a topic of discussion end or be moved, please comply.

8) Keep the global nature of our team in minds when posting. Keep it relevant to all of our team, not just those in one part of the world.

We are here for the same purpose. Relax and enjoy our thread.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 56 smilesmile

Congratulations on joining the billion point club.

Cheers

Thanks Sgt. Joe!! It's kinda neat to find this milestone of ours being recogized so quickly from "outside" the team.

Edit: While we had plenty of room to spare today, it's clear the matter with the transitioner impacted us. It will be interesting to see how much our numbers "rebound" tomorrow.

This is great! I thought I had seen the team points pass one billion the other day. Is two billion our next goal?

The one billion points was a team milestone, not really a goal. I haven't really set any goals for this year. Back at the start of the year, I got minimal response when I asked folks what they thought would be good. We'll hit the two billion point milestone in due time. I think the next big team milestone will be returning three million results. We're at 2,776,404 at the moment and I think we'll make 3,000,000 before we hit 2000 years of run time (1582+ at the moment).

Hey Judson.. what did you mean by a 4x4?

I thought he was referring to his badges displayed to the left here. He now has four rows of four badges each.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 56 smilesmile

As some of you have probably seen, we've had another tornado outbreak in the US today. I see that Branson, Missouri was one place hit pretty bad. That's only about 25 miles south of where Dr. Mike is. It sounds pretty bad but I don't think it's as bad as when Joplin got hit. Joplin's about 75 or so miles west of Dr. Mike. Been a long time since we've heard from him here but I'm believing he's okay.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 56 smilesmile

Hi all. I am getting better every day. In 4 days they will remove the last probe coming out of my body.
Then I hope to get more details on the chances for the cancer to be gone for good.
On the other hand since prostate removal is the first step for a sex change, I was advised to watch for the following symptoms:
Getting upset for no apparent reasons,
getting distracted by shining objects and the worst is not being able to parallel park. laughing
I’ll let you know of any development, for now I have too stop typing, I just broke a finger nail. clown

Regards Rej

For the first year you will need to get a blood test every 3 months for PSA and then in the second year it goes to every six months. Here's hoping all your readings are zeros.

Cheers

It's been an interesting year for prostate cancer. Here in the US, they're now pushing back on using PSA as indicator for it. Seems that a lot of the time, prostate cancer is very slow developing and you can go years just monitoring it. On the other hand, when that is not the case, it seems to be very agressive and rapidly developing with a very high probability of death. The real kicker though is that we don't seem to know enough yet to be able to make any kind of accurate determination whether a given case of prostate cancer is the slow kind or the agressive kind. Frankly, that just plain sucks.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 56 smilesmile

Judson, Divorce is such a difficult thing for everyone. Some people feel it so much more than others. It is impossible for any of us to help but please understand that we all hope you pull through it as easily as possible; life goes on and this to will pass.

Judson, RT is right. We're here for you but you'll do fine. We never got any guarantee that life would be fair, just that we could deal with it and get through it. My first wife was the daughter of a first-generation Italian-American father and first-generation German-American mother. I'm the son of two east Tennessee mountain families (hillbilly as I refer to it). Actually, my mother's side of the family were part of the Virgina farmers that crossed the gap and settled Tennessee and Kentucky back in the 1700's. My first marriage answered the question of what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object!! Some three years after that, I met my wife on April 20th, proposed on May 23rd (she did say yes too) and the wedding was on September 1st, all in the same year twenty years ago (1991). Compost will happen but it's great for planting something new in!

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 56 smilesmile

coffee coffee coffeeGood Morning MOT coffee coffee coffee

Hang in there Judson. Life seems so random sometimes. Who will get cancer, be in a car wreck, get a divorce, win the lottery. Of course all of our behaviors influence this but often they don't. I suppose that is the basis of the "I'd rather be lucky than good". Time may not heal all wounds but, it does lessen the pain in my experience.

I did not get too lucky on the cancer or on the arthritis front but did with the wife. We married in 1963 and she is still putting up with me.

It is interesting the speculation on points. We could double our points or just gain about 400 million (or even less) depending at least partially on circumstances beyond our control. I have adopted the attitude of just getting the most that I can on a daily basis by keeping as many of the cores active as possible. The next technological shoe should fall before too long and then we can get a better idea.

Oh.. Thanks Keith I see what you mean on the 4x4.

Everyone have a great day and take care of yourself in the process.

Well the PSA is the second indicator, the first being the prostate size. But to make sure you have to undergo annual biopsies. With this you can monitor the cancer progression and location in your prostate. It is not a guessing game. In my case it appears that I was operated just in time since the cancer had migrated in the prostate envelope. A little longer and it could have contaminated other organs. I was lucky. The PSA was only at 8.5, it is the biopsy that triggered the decision to operate.
