<snip> If I were to take a quick SWAG at this, it might be due to two things:I am hearing (from a friend that will remain nameless here) the NVIDIA based GPU cards will end up dis-favored by the WCG. Opinions 1. The AMD based cards over the last couple of years have been a little better in terms of compute per watt and price for a given level of performance. 2. The latest, just announced, NVIDIA series has made some changes that hurt compute performance - especially 64-bit floating point. This was done to improve graphics performance while reducing power consumption. It remains to be seen if they will have a version that provides similar gains for CUDA / OpenCL applications. Of course, it could also be something like the error rate seen on WUs or incompatibilities with driver levels. - D |

It also seems that Nvidia is lagging behind ATI in OpenCL support with their drivers.

darth, looks like SN2S is going to be one of the shorter projects here as you thought. DSFL getting back to normal may extend it a tad as more folks will be able to crunch DSFL again with the server issue being resolved. Still, while I'm closing in on gold for it, staying with it until ruby or emerald may be a good idea before doing more GFAM or DSFL. I'll have to remember to check Sek's dashboard a bit regularly and decide on projects given the projections there. Hopefully, there won't be problems for me getting all three to sapphire.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Congratulations NiceMedTexMD and Vuj!! Nice big numbers ![]() ![]() On the medical front, I am still going to PT and continuing to make progress. I quit the pain pills almost a week ago and so am uncomfortable a lot of the time but, at least I don't have the side-effects of the pain meds. I actually got up into the attic and fixed a coax cable the air conditioner guy jerked out and got under a bathroom sink and replaced the faucet and associated bits .. so I must be doing a lot better. ![]() It also seems that Nvidia is lagging behind ATI in OpenCL support with their drivers. All of my cards are Nvidia-- ![]() I feel for you old friend. I, like you, have nothing but Nvidia cards. When I first started building machines I had some bad luck with ATI and some good luck with Nvidia and so became prejudiced. Worse, I just bought and installed a Nvidia GTX 580 (>$450) in anticipation of the GPU project. For a while I have had it doing some work over at GPUGrid. I am shutting that down at this point and leave it ready for WCG stuff. I am sure their causes are worthy but I just don't associate with them like I do the work here at WCG. I will wait till things get sorted out here at WCG relative to GPUs before I make any more expenditures on GPUs. If nanoprobe is right, I certainly don't want to buy any more Nvidias. And have no more money for GPUs at the moment anyway (presuming I wish to keep my wife of 48 years). Good morning to all this Sunday, although I know by now (9:22 PST) it is afternoon and evening on the east coast and Europe. I am getting close to having my taxes paid off at which time I will consider buying a new system. I have already begun searching for sources for the best available system but I want to ask for input about what some of you think may be the best system to get at this time. I have been investigating what's available at EVGA where they have mother boards and graphics cards, and software, but I think I may be gravitating toward a new tower enclosure and display. While I am not the last guy to ask about GPUs, I am pretty close. On the other hand, I know a few things about building CPU crunchers. So.. I recommend that you go with an Intel I7 CPU. I like Gigabyte motherboards and usually equip them with 4GBs of memory. I use Coolermaster V8 CPU coolers and Coolermaster Cases ( I have used the "Scout" recently as well as the 932 HAF.) On power supplies, I have been using little 430s but those will not cut it if you want to do both CPU and GPU work. You will likely want to go with a 750w or bigger (and 80 (bronze at least) rated) with PCI-E cables for powering of the GPU(s). I am a fan of WD disk drives but will likely be switching to solid state disks soon..now that the price has come down and a lot of the issues have been worked out. If you want to do GPU computing as well as CPU, I would recommend the 932HAF case as it is BIG and the HAF stands for High Air Flow. Additionally I would make sure that the motherboard has at least two PCI-E slots. I don't know if it is necessary but my video is on a small card and the GPU crunching is on the GTX580. (Both are Nvidia- EVGA). Of course, opinions are like a...hum Noses? and everyone has one. The above is just mine and all the choices are arguable. If you are looking to buy a built system, I have no idea. Everyone have a great day! |

I hope I didn't confuse everyone on this Nvidia/ATI thing. It just looks like Nvidia is concentrating more of their efforts toward the gamers with less emphasis on the crunching aspect of their cards. The projects that use Nvidia CUDA apps are still very fast but I think the future will be OpenCl as that can be coded to run on either card. The ATI drivers seem to be better optimized to run OpenCl than the Nvidia drivers. That's not to say that Nvidia won't come up with better optimization but like I said before, Nvidia seems to be focusing their attention on the gaming aspect at this time. I'm sure the qualified Nvidia cards will run the WCG GPU tasks with no issues.
