New to the grid, slightly confused.

I hope that I'm posting this in the right place and I'm not doing anything wrong by posting crying

I just wanted to ask, how are you all contributing so much? I see people that have contributed so much time to projects, have so many badges and so many points. Like you have tons and tons of 2 year badges.

Does anyone have any tips for contributing to the grid? At the moment I'm only contributing with one dual-core computer, I have other computers around can I have these add to my contribution? If I can do, will they add more time towards my badges or only return more results?

If I were to change my processor to something that has more cores would that help contribute more? Do you leave your computers crunching over night?

Please any tips confused I just want to contribute laughing

Re: New to the grid, slightly confused.

Many of us full-timers crunch 24/7 with our computers as its the most cost efficient method, rather than having a super expensive computer thats only on 12 hours a day.

Also, if you have an 8 core machine, like the i7-2600k, you can do 8 years of crunching time in just 1 year, theoretically. And yes, multiple machines will increase your contribution

Many of us have been here for years and care very much about the science projects being run.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the kind reply and explanation it's very much appreciated, I think this is what I don't quite understand.

I've seen people that have joined in 2006, let's say, that have done well over 6 years worth of crunching, how does that work? Sorry if that's a dumb question.

You can add as many computers as you want. Credits and badges will accumulate under your username. Get a cup of coffee and look around the forums. There are numerous tips and tricks to crunching. Rather simple, the more threads you have the more you can crunch.

Good luck and welcome. coffee

Its not a dumb question at all. So say you joined in 2006, and you had a state of the art quad core computer (I think that's what we had back then). If you left your computer on 24/7 from 2006-2007, you would have completed 4 years worth of crunching...leave it on till 2008 and you would've had 8 years of cruching time. Does it making sense?

Yes that makes sense, thank you so much for explaining that I do really appreciate it.

Re: New to the grid, slightly confused.

Just to add, hyperthreading cores are counted as 1 core to. Not as strong as a full core, but helps with your total crunched. So a quad core i7 has 4 cores with hyperthreading. Boinc will see it as 8 cores.
You will want to crunch within your budget. I started with a dual. Now, my main rig has two 6 cores with hyperthreading, 24 threads or cores according to boinc. My second rig has 1 6 core w/hyperthreading. But it's a dual socket motherboard. Saving up for the second one.
Welcome aboard to WCG. Any questions you have, someone here has an answer for you. Good luck crunching.

Re: New to the grid, slightly confused.

Thank you Bearcat! I've been looking at upgrading my cores all day since started this thread with the green eye monster looking up at you all. Hopefully I can have a rig as good as yours one day.
