I am using a signature prepared on this site
----------------------------------------http://signature.statseb.fr which includes all badges from WCG (and other projects) Since it has been impossible for other sites such as BoincStats to include bagdes from WCG on their signatures I was wondering if http://signature.statseb.fr might be doing something that my be detrimental to the WCG site in order to get the necessary info. In that case i would consider stop using that signature . Thanks ccandido |

Your badges you've earned here on WCG, are on the left whenever you post here on WCG forums. No need to put them in your signature HERE at WCG.

Thaks Bugg, but my question was not that.
----------------------------------------I use the same signature in several projects and besides WCG badges, there are also other projects badges in the signature. Its not possible to adapt the signature to the specific project your're posting. But my question is not directed at the use of the signature. My question has to do with how the site that offers the signature does that and the eventual stress that the site ofering the signature might pose on the wcg site to get the info. I suspect its necessary to downoload all pages in the wcg site to obtain just the badges data. Do you know anything about that? Or who I should contact regarding this matter? Thanks [Edit 1 times, last edit by ccandido at Apr 23, 2012 9:23:40 AM] |

Fetching the badges from WCG is not a problem, posting links going to an address external to WCG is not a problem, as it's the external site's bandwidth being used.
But, you can reduce the bandwidth for yourself and WCG further as well, depending on how dynamic the generation of these signature images are. 1. Fetch a copy of *all* the WCG badges one off, 8 per science (including the white and grey backgrounded used in placed for illustration), never to be fetched again from WCG's site, and store on local computer in an indexed table. 2. Fetch the badge level info from WCG [per signature subscribed member only] and generate sig whilst pulling the badge images in from your local image store. Trust though, you're already doing it that fashion, which than makes it seemingly least taxing on WCG. --//-- |

For me, personally, bandwidth is not a problem, but I would not want to make it a problem for the wcg servers. The problem is I am not sure I could follow your instructions correctly. The signature generator site in question is - 'Signature for BOINC users' (with all project's badges, http://signature.statseb.fr). I am not responsible for the site, and as a user I have not proceeded as you suggested in your two steps above. [I would be able to follow your suggestions regarding downloads, but have doubts about how to make an "indexed table". For me tables are those I use in MS Excel or Word, but I'm guessing that's not what you meant.] However, I am inclined to think that the site manager has proceeded as you have suggested in how he built the site, and in doing so has avoided constant downloads from WCG servers. However, i cannot be sure about that. Anyway, if not recommended by WCG, because of excessive bandwidth use, I might simply stop using that signature. Thanks ccandido |

Hi,
If you're a user of the signature product, than that is not a load to WCG. Many on the WCG forums use the 'SNURK' sig in their forum signature profile without issue (click on the seksig link below my posts to see it. --//-- |

Yes, I am a user of the signature product. Since it is not a great deal of a load for WCG, I will continue to use the signature. I prefer this one because I participate in serveral projects (other than WCG) and some of these have their onwn badges system. This signature joins all badges from all projects in one single signature. |
