![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Congratulations Coingames, brown chris, dkt and Jonathon Wright!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Keith, I will be waiting for news on your surgery. If you will have someone in your family call or email me with the results, I will post them here. Many will be waiting to hear. Lots of us are thinking of you. Total agreement!! ![]() ![]() Well, since it is localized, it's a choice between radiation or surgery. Radiation has about an 85 percent survival rate at 10 years. Surgery is about 95 percent. With surgery, you remove the whole prostate thus removing all of the cancer. With a good surgeon and nerve-sparing removal, the colleteral damage is minimal to none. You have a catheter and bag until it's removed with the stitches several days after the surgery. There's then very short term incontinence until the bladder muscles recover from the swelling. As long as the blood flow to the prostate is sealed off without affecting blood flow "downstream", you don't have the sexual side effects folks tend to think of. With radiation, it's a bit less precise and greater risk of damage to nerves and blood vessels. The prostate becomes scar tissue and I have to think there's potential side effects from that in time. Given that with my biopsy, I needed no pain med, had only minor discomfort and bleeding that was gone after a few hours, I feel pretty confident about the same doc doing the surgery. There doesn't seem to be much upside in my case and plenty of downside in that dealing with it now this way seems about as good as could be hoped for and things can only get worse over time if I wait. In about 90 or so days from when the possibility of cancer first arose in the form of the spiked PSA, I'll have dealt with it and the cancer will be gone. Yes, there'll be regular testing for the next two years but as I see it, the alternative was to not get regular physicals, not find the cancer early and not make it past 60. Surgery seems like a bargain, if not a gift. As for the results, I expect to be able to update everyone here when I return home the following day. The actual surgery will be in the afternoon. I'll report to the hospital about lunchtime and should be out of surgery about dinnertime. Some time the following day, they'll kick me out and I'll recover at home. I'll know more after the pre-op work on Monday. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I appreciate seeing your logic on that Keith. I did not understand it like that at all. That is great! I am excited that it will be that easy for you with so few side-effects. Tell us more after your Monday preop...either here or via email. Everyone have a great day today. |
