Hi there,
I am a new BOINC user, and until reading the help files / forums, I felt relatively tech savvy. ![]() I have Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. I installed BOINC (v 6.10.58), and it prompted me to restart, which I did. It then attempted to connect to "localhost." I tried setting Select Computer -> Host Name to www.worldcommunitygrid.org. That didn't work either. It will fail to connect after a bit, but there is nothing under Tasks or Messages. I tried adding ports 80, 443, and 31416 to the firewall. I haven't done this in Norton Internet Security before, so I'm not ruling user error out here. I uninstalled (through the Control Panel), redownloaded, shut off my firewall & antivirus settings in Norton, shut down ALL programs, and reinstalled. I was not prompted to restart. With the firewall & antivirus off, it again tried to connect to localhost & then I entered www.worldcommunitygrid.org, no dice. I have not yet ever been prompted to enter a user name & password (although I registered before downloading). I tried to read the help / support forums, but they don't look anything like what I'm experiencing, and with no errors to go off, I am at a loss as to where to go next. ![]() Help? |

I tried a "tracert secure.worldcommunitygrid.org" in a cmd prompt. It timed out after step 12. The last available step is to "206.108.111.106." Not sure if it's relevant.

Hi,
----------------------------------------What field are you trying to enter www.worldcommunitygrid.org in? Normally, normally, when BOINC Manager (BM) is started [which is just a GUI front end], it auto-connects to the core client - CC- program boinc.exe, *if* it is running. You don't have to enter anything, but if you do select a computer in the advanced menu, localhost or IP 127.0.0.1 is good. Just enter without password. Select computer leaving both fields blank (host name/password) would also on OK just auto-connect. If boinc.exe is not running, the BM, it can not connect, so check that first in Task Manager. boinc.exe loads as service *prior* to signing in, if BOINC was installed with Protected Application Execution (PAE) selected during the install, else it will load when the user logs in to the computer. With a PAE install, you're also forcing BOINC to create/use limited rights accounts specially created for BOINC. This is the reason a first time install boot has to be done. For the rest, you seem to have found the correct port numbers to exempt in the security software. You could limit that exemption to just 4/5 applications: boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe boinccmd.exe boincscr.exe boinctray.exe Edit: P.S. If you used the WCG download package of the software [think you did], your client is already attached to World Community Grid, else you have to open the project tab, once the BM is connected to the CC, and via the tools menu add/attach www.worldcommunitygrid.org as a project. Hello katzenart,
The FAQ Index at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,21501 can be confusing. The installation guide at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28971 is admittedly cluttered with screenshots of old installations before BOINC 6.10.58. Read Caveat 2 then skip down to section 4 to see the screenshot for installing BOINC 6.10.58. Be sure you are allowing All Users to run BOINC. ![]() Lawrence |

Hello katzenart, The FAQ Index at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,21501 can be confusing. Be sure you are allowing All Users to run BOINC. ![]() Lawrence Lawrence, unfortunately, if I'm reading correctly, I believe you have lost this bet. I installed with BOINC Screensaver checked, Protected application execution UNchecked, and Allow All Users to control BOINC checked. Hi, Hi! What field are you trying to enter www.worldcommunitygrid.org in? The wrong one ![]() Normally, normally, when BOINC Manager (BM) is started [which is just a GUI front end], it auto-connects to the core client - CC- program boinc.exe, *if* it is running. You don't have to enter anything, but if you do select a computer in the advanced menu, localhost or IP 127.0.0.1 is good. Just enter without password. Select computer leaving both fields blank (host name/password) would also on OK just auto-connect. The "host name" field is now blank. I think the boinc.exe process is what's troublesome. It was not running when I checked the task manager. So, I didn't check PAE. boinc.exe does not seem to be running on log in. I tried to run boinc.exe, and a cmd screen comes up & lists the following (after system stats): Unhandled Exception Detected... - Unhandled Exception Record - Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x6B4B0672 read attempt to address 0x00000124 Then it begins a dialog about loading a debugger, loads a couple .dlls, then hangs before spitting out a bunch of stuff too fast to read & closing the cmd screen. For the rest, you seem to have found the correct port numbers to exempt in the security software. You could limit that exemption to just 4/5 applications: boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe boinccmd.exe boincscr.exe boinctray.exe Sweet. Edit: P.S. If you used the WCG download package of the software [think you did], your client is already attached to World Community Grid, else you have to open the project tab, once the BM is connected to the CC, and via the tools menu add/attach www.worldcommunitygrid.org as a project. Yes, I used the download package from this site. I don't seem to have any entries under any tabs, including the project tab, but I'm assuming this stuff loads when you actually connect. |

OK. Uninstall, reinstall, following the steps under point 4, of the link Lawrence found you: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28971, then the second screen frame when you choose the "PAE" and the "Allow all users", and if you like the screensaver (uses CPU time when on as it's animated).
----------------------------------------If you launch the task manager, you have to select "Show Processes for all users", to see the services and not-you-user processes. Switch to the services tab and there you now will be seeing BOINC. Right click on it if for selections of stop/start, if you wish to completely unload BOINC from memory or stop/start to complete refresh. This will unload tasks in progress, so they would restart at the last saved checkpoint. You are correct in that the BM will only show information, any information, when connected to the running CC. Until that point it will show in right hand bottom that it is trying to connect or is not connected, and if it is, it will say "Connected to localhost (6.10.58)" with the current official WCG version, and a little globe icon before it to indicate you're connected to "the matrix". edit: twice ifyou without space... it is *hot* here and bone dry. Hey! That seems to have worked SekeRob. Thanks for your help guys! :)
I had a small issue getting it connected the first time, but some button I pushed fixed it, and the problem is not reproducible. I will post back if it pops up again. |
