request for help in saving the project work when the computer is shut down

Dear Sir, I am living in a remote area of western india where electricity supply is erratic hence we have to shut the computer when the supply is stoped
the problem is that the software starts the work from scratch when the computer is booted again

Pl suggest me some way to save the work of the software or ask somebody to make the necessary changes so that the software saves the work periodically

As I feel this is common problem of erratic elelctricity supply in all developing nations

if anybody can make changes in the software a lot of computing power of the developing nations will be utilized by this project

regards

Re: request for help in saving the project work when the computer is shut down

Hi, welcome to the WCG forums

*Normally* tasks are restarting from last checkpoint saved, which is default, as often as possible, but not more frequent than every 60 seconds. Jobs starting from scratch suggests crash like power out. If nothing can be done about that, than risk of job progress file damage is always present. Frankly, don't know what to do about that. If affordable, a low priced UPS helps to for instance set for an organized shutdown, ideally hibernate, which works fine on Windows and Linux in my experience. Then tasks actually resume from the second they were put to sleep.

Whilst, when in a situation of unreliable power, my recommendation would be to not participate in sciences that have long intervals on saving progress such as Clean Energy. Sciences such as Clean Water and Help Conquer Cancer are projects with relative short progress save intervals.

Another option within the Boinc software is to only run in for certain hours of each day. I do NOT know about where you are, but some parts of the World have good power supplies for certain times of the day and the they go off at night for instance, Boinc could be set up to run that way thru the existing options.

If power outages are common, then I would also recommend running on a laptop so that you have a few hours of battery time even if you don't have a UPS. If you can afford both, then you should double up. BOINC has an option for whether to do work on batteries and therefore if the power was out, the PC should register as unplugged an automatically pause work. Make sure to also check the box that says "leave application in memory" if you haven't already.
