Laptop screen close

I believe when I close my laptop screen it puts the computer in standby mode. Does that stop WCG from using it? Do I need to leave the screen up all the time?

Thanks,
John

Re: Laptop screen close

Hello deadringer,
First, BOINC considers power. By default, it stops running when you unplug your laptop. If you are imprudent ( sad ) you can disable that in your profile. If you have set your OS to go to standby when you shut the cover, that will indeed stop any BOINC projects from running even if you are still plugged in. You can check this, but you need to be careful. BOINC Manager will show elapsed time (wall clock time) so if you close your laptop cover for an hour then open it Manager will show an hour has elapsed for a running project, even if it was on standby the whole time without running. Instead, before you close the cover for a check, bring up BOINC Manager in the Task window, select a running project, then click on Properties to see the CPU time. Shut the cover. Later, open the cover and see what Properties says. This will tell you if your OS is going into standby mode or not.

In the power settings, on most laptops and specifically in Win7, there is a setting to set the pc to do nothing when you close the lid. This will ensure the laptop continues crunching, or whatever it is doing when you close the lid. I do this on my laptops but you NEED to be SURE you have a GOOD backup program as laptop hard drives do not traditionally last as long as desktop ones. Over the years I have gone thru 1 laptop hard drives, using the opportunity to upgrade to upgrade to an SSD one the last time, I have been crunching with my laptops for over 10 years!! I have only replaced the hard drive once because of failure and I crunch using 1 core of the dual core laptop 24/7/365. I used to crunch using 2 cores but that is when the drive died, it is slower crunching but better for me using only 1 core. I also have a laptop cooler underneath it, it has fans built into it and runs off the usb with a pass thru cable. I got the cooler one sale for 5 bucks US and bought 3 of them at the same time, when 1 dies, or the fan starts squealing too bad I will replace it. I use an electronics spray in the motor when it does begin to squeal, but eventually even that won't stop it. I do that in my desktop fans too. I have been crunching since 1999 and have 15 pc's running right now so have gone thru a few problems over the years. It doesn't help that most of my hardware is recycled from pc's that were replaced by friends.

Re: Laptop screen close

We discussed this few days ago and posted a screenshot of the advanced power plan screen [of W7]. Recommend to set the display to power off anyhow... it gets warm AND, for some systems the keyboard area is [partial] air intake... close it but not completely... pencil near the edge. If you switch off the auto-shutdown on full lid close, you forget and you stick it in a carrying bag, something might get half fried or toasty... certainly will drain the battery, long or short.

Heed thee!

Everything you have said is VERY true and indeed SHOULD be heeded!!!

ps my laptop sits on a small table by my couch and never moves, in fact the battery is not even in it. Sometimes I forget about the real World uses!

Re: Laptop screen close

Deadringer, you could actually alter the settings easily, so that you could shut the screen, leaving the system running, and this way you'll save electricity of the screen being on the whole time.
Simply right click on the desktop background/screen itself then go to properties.
After, go to the screen saver tab, and click on monitor power, then click on the "advanced" tab, then click on the first drop-down-menu, and make the answer there when i close the lid of my portable computer, "do nothing".

This way the screen will not be consuming eatra energy we don't need to waste when not using the laptop/PC.
