So, as the title says, I'm in charge of a room which itself has 2 Pentium III servers and the third one was a server that was going to the trash, so I got that one too and decided to crunch on that server too. In fact, 2 of those servers have 2 Pentium III processors, meaning that in total I have 5 Pentium III crunching for World Community Grid.
----------------------------------------I was shocked to find out that the servers had a Pentium III and were running Server 2003 so nicely, and so since they were not used for some general tasks, in fact they were absolutely doing nothing, I decided to install BOINC on those machines. I'm currently crunshing Help Fight Childhood Cancer on those servers and in almost 10 hours they are at a 35% progress! I'm just keeping crunching every PC and server I get my hands on! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Would you care to post any benchmarks ?

Seeing at that is an older pc you might consider the shorter units as long as you are not tied to a project for any particular reason. ![]() ![]() |

Actually I crunsh projects based on how much days is left for a project. I actually don't care for the workunit length, I'm just crunshing the project that will finish sooner, so I can have a better chance of getting some barges

So, a HFCC took 21 hours 32 minutes on the Pentium III server. Also, just noticed that the servers actually have Pentium III Xeon Processors.

The extra L2 cache will significantly improve your performance. My last PIII was retired nearly a year ago now, if I remember right 24-30 hours was typical for HFCC - then they started on harder targets and my times went to two days.

All of my HFCC stayed between 19 to 24 hours.
----------------------------------------Here is the final server setup: Server 1: 2x Intel Pentium III @ 1.26Ghz 512Kb L2 Cache Server 2: 1x Intel Pentium III Xeon @ 1.00Ghz 256Kb L2 Cache Both servers have an SCSI 40GB Hard Disk @ Volume config on the RAID controller. While the Xeon is lower in Ghz, it performs a little faster (1 to 2 hours less time per HFCC workunit) than the regular Pentium III which is clocked higher and has more cache. Of course Server 1 processes 2 workunits at a time since it is dual processor. ![]() ![]() |

I hope they give you long and productive service. Cheers
