Way to save the WCG Charts and Sigs (SekeRob and SNURK)

Hey all.

So, I was horrified to see the new photobucket rules on the dynamicly changing file names.

I see that SekeRob and SNURK might be effected by that.

I love these signatures so much, that I want to help.

I have a web server, with unlimited bandwidth, that I really don't use anything for. The only limitation I have, is the amount of files, but when the cap is 300,000 files, and I only use like 28,000 of them, I doubt this will be a problem for a while.

I host BOINC Sigs for Niel Munday as well as a mirror of the site iBlocklist.com. I would like to offer that opportunity up to you guys as well.

I can give you both, for free, FTP accounts to your own folders, and your own custom sub-domain, as in:

wcgcharts.gamechaser.net/filename.jpg
wcgsig.gamechaser.net/filename.jpg

Now free sounds too good to be true, so you must be thinking what do I want? I want nothing but to keep these 2 things alive for all World Community Grid members! I have a web server with unlimited bandwidth, and I want to help. I love the Charts and the signatures, and would love to help keep them alive.

If you guys are interested, either post below, or e-mail me.

If it matters:
PHP 5 Or 4 if you need.
MySQL 5
Unlimited Bandwidth
99.999% Uptime
Server provided by 1and1 Webhost

Thanks!,
Chase Tarson

The world needs more people like you.
Even if the offer doesn't work out, as a normal cruncher, I would like to thank you for this.

Re: Way to save the WCG Charts and Sigs (SekeRob and SNURK)

Hi Chase Tarson,

Thanks so much for the offer. The dilemma is, that changing hosting breaks all the many short-links, and PB scrambling the file names breaks them too. The shortlinks are for instance you only needing to remember WCGDSH (Dashboard) or WCGPI1 (The Pie) or WCGFAM (GFAM). If you had them in the address bar, just typing these names out brings out the http://bit.ly/... short addresses then enter to bring them up.

For the moment they changed the red message to black and is now reading
To ensure the privacy of all your images, we recommend that you select the options to scramble both future and past uploads. However, if you intend for your photos to be public or used for business purposes, we recognize that you may not want to scramble the URLs. As of November 30, all new upload URLs will be scrambled by default. You will have to uncheck the box above to maintain the original URL structure.

It looks like they rethought their position and now just changed the tick box default of scrambling. Flipping that off would return state normal for me.

Am using SmartFTP uploading. If that tool allows managing the hosted files... moving/renaming/deleting/copying than I might still take you up on the proposal, as that is something PB has never allowed and would make managing the hosted files easier, then there still being the shortlink dilemma. Traffic for a long time redirected to advertise PB's front page "While you're here...".

BTW, in doing what they did, they messed up all the album statistics, so can't even tell you the bandwidth used, but remember it said 197MB on September 20. The album does show hit counts since September 13, which is when the mess started. There was since 10,700 views including Sept.25 when users found the service resumed, but then yesterday it dropped to 100... can't remember seeing any stat that was below 1000/day, so visitor numbers has been destroyed. They'll know the cost of their folly soon.

Thanks again

And PB-mess continues - I see Chase's 2-days old sig even thought SNURK already updated it :-(

Re: Way to save the WCG Charts and Sigs (SekeRob and SNURK)

Same sort of dilemma for me too. If the signatures move to another location this means that hundreds of WCG members need to edit their forum profiles to point to the new location. That's not only the WCG forums, also other crunching related forums where the signatures are used as well. Who knows in which corners of the web these signatures are hiding..

I really appreciate the offer though, and I am tempted. What better then a free unlimited server with a short URL (very handy for a signature). I will definitely consider it when the time comes to renew my account at Photobucket (that's well into 2014), or when they mess up again.

My guess is the signatures use about 15 GB of bandwidth per month now (that's a guess because exact stats are messed up too by Photobucket d oh - see SekeRob's post). That's about 1.000.000 file views per month. Storage usage is only minimal, about 10MB. FTP access essential.

Thanks again peace , SNURK

Why not start giving new signature-users a new URL while keeping Photobucket as an option for old signature-users atleast until 2014?

In that line I was thinking maybe Seke-Rob could move ONE of his over and see how it goes. Maybe even just the dashboard but not all the others and just see how it goes. I KNOW it will make extra work, at least in the beginning, but if it IS better then in the end it was worth it. If it does not work then a learning process was also worth it.

Re: Way to save the WCG Charts and Sigs (SekeRob and SNURK)

Thank you guys for the feedback. After I made the post, I thought about the difficulty in having to change other people's to the new url. I would think that the only easy way, was for newer people, give then the url, and since the #####.png would still be the same on photobucket and my site, it would just be change from photobucket.com/#####.png to wcgsig.gamechaser.net/#####.png.

However, I do understand that is alot to ask of people. I know how much you guys have invested in using Photobucket, and I want you guys to know, that the offer still stands if Photobucket ever makes a mistake again, just post here and we can get started.
