cool Does the latest user earn points easily than old user?

hi, I am running WCG project on AMD phenomII.

I have a question. In the future, more powerful CPU would be released and it seems to solve problems quite earlier than one of now.

So I worry about earning points much now make no sense in near future.

From my knowledge, and I could be wrong, the only advantage with faster CPUS is that they can do more workunits faster, meaning points are gained faster, but I think each workunit has a set area 0 - 200 of points it gives out.

Crunching only for points makes no sense anyway.
Crunch for science and charity these are the real rewards.

Points and badges are a bonus! wink

Sunfolk is right also, the Points and Badges should be the afterthought.

You are MOSTLY correct, BUT points are a way of measuring your contribution today compared to a week, a month, or even a year ago. AND also to a week, month or year from now! Especially for those of us with multiple pc's a drop in points is a crucial way to figure out something is wrong. Points are what they are, a necessary evil, but they should be used wisely and NEVER used to compare one project to another!

The OP has a valid point though, the points earned today will be a pittance compared to what will be possible this time next year! New cpu's and gpu's are coming out almost every day, and each is, for the most part, more capable than the one that came out only yesterday! In addition new drivers are coming out for the gpu's making them even faster at what they do! SSD hard drives are also making pc's run faster all by themselves. Each item by itself makes an incremental step, some bigger than others, taken together they can make a HUGE difference over all!

Re: Does the latest user earn points easily than old user?

While I fully agree with every sentence of your post mikey, I am still not getting the point of whole thread (probably the language barrier raised eyebrow ). OP asked if "the latest user earns points easily than old user" without pointing out why this question has been asked and what might be the right direction to answer it confused .

My answer is "not" shame on you . I am an old VDC user (doing voluntary distributed computing since Jan 2000) and currently I am earning more points than lot of new users. But, I really don't see why this is important - everybody of us is doing his/her best to support his/her favourite project and try to compete with other users peace .

Cheers and

We share the same opinion. My first thought upon reading the question was "what exactly is being asked here?"
Yes, newer computers will earn point easier and faster. The alternative is just giving up and doing nothing. This benefits no one.
Everyone faces the same decision when deciding to purchase a new computer: Do I get one now or wait for the next best thing? As there is always another something soon to be released one can easily be paralyzed and never purchase at all because there is always something better coming - and cheaper.
At some point you just have to decide what it is you want and make the leap. To sit and wait is to let life pass you by.

You will have to decide whats important to your contribution. Crunching with what you have or getting something more powerful. Don't let the badges or points make that determination for you. Crunch with what feels right for you. The fact that your contributing is what is important. Thanks for your contribution.

Earn what you can right now...its more than you will have if you choose not to contribute now. I have a saying "get cores on project". That is what matters. If you don't have the cores on project now, you will be missing out on all that CPU time that you would have to make up later.

Also, I don't know if you've noticed, but in the past few years, there has been a slowdown in the manufacturing of CPU's. We've had quad core cpu's for what, nearly 10 years? And Intel's new mainstream cpu (the i5-3570k) is still a quad core cpu. Sure the architecture is better but in 10 years we could be doing much better.

So your points will still be worth something in the future, in my opinion

I too am a LONG TIME VDC cruncher having started pre Boinc at Seti. New users have NOTHING on those of us able to keep the old crunchers on line. BUT those old crunchers taken as a one on one comparison to the newer 6 and 8 core pc's are not even in the same league, it is like Little League and the Major Leagues in baseball! I will let my overall Boinc signature come thru for right now to illustrate my point, but will turn it back off tomorrow.
