Viktors.....appreciate the input.
Those units were not acquired here......as you can see I am a WCG noob....but not new to Rosetta As far as I am aware the units were perfectly normal and they processed without incident. ![]() |

The data for the work units is usually about 1MB, and sometimes as little as 0.5 MB. If you get a download in the 4MB range, you are almost certainly downloading the Rosetta program along with it. If you have viruses, bad disk sectors, or some other strange problem on your machine, only then, would you repeatedly get these larger downloads. If this is the case, you might want to use the "contact us" link and give me your device ID nuimber from the preferences window and we will see if there is anything unusual going on and work from there. Thanks. ![]() |

As has been stated, workunit files range from ~500k to ~1MB. There are no workunits larger than. If you are downloading anything larger, you are downloading the Rosetta application for some reason.
----------------------------------------You can not tell by the size of the workunit file how long it will take. The calculation is non-deterministic, so we don't know how long any particular workunit will take until people start crunching it. We know that workunits with longer sequence lengths take longer than ones with shorter sequence lengths, but that's just a general rule.

seems like i've been getting only small ones with only small points...
----------------------------------------Averaging 4 hours a unit but only getting 150ish points per unit where the overall averages are duble the time and points per unit!! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 23, 2005 2:11:14 AM] |

seems like i've been getting only small ones with only small points... This happens to us all. I have been getting a large number of small WUs. There have been no monster WUs (taking over 100 hours to crunch) for a while but I am sure they could come around again. |

I hope big units do come around on occasion because I don't have 24/7 internet access on my machines and ud mon won't work properly (working on that)..........so I am getting a lot of idle time at present, when work units complete unattended.
Had a nice 15-ish hour unit yesterday which was helpful ![]() It's a shame there is no way to "match" work unit sizes to processor speed |

I have been using udmon on one PC without any problems since it became available for WCG. Are you using the -wcg option at startup ?
If you want to discuss more, drop me an email and we can always chat via IM. |

Thank you.
It is my own fault as I haven't read the ud mon related threads here yet...and I (think) I still have ud installed on the machine I mentioned. Soon I shall probably do my regular reformatting session on my rigs...then I can get everything set up and cleanly configured. But I shall take you up on the offer if need be ![]() |

If you use special tools to hold more than one work unit, please keep this to a minimum, otherwise some work unit results may arrive so late that the server has sent those work units to additional other devices, assuming your's might have dropped membership or something. Thus we end up spending more grid resources than needed on those work units. While you still get points for this work, it can sometimes be counterproductive for the project at large. We have some ideas for improving efficiency in the future, but for now, we cannot do much about this.

Hi Viktors
Speaking personally, I only cache enough to keep me up and running for a few days. So used to server outages elsewhere I learnt early on to be prepared. Simple matter of knowing the production abilities of one's system and planning accordingly. I managed over 5000 results to date without any timeouts. But, yes, the general point you make is a valid one. ![]() |
