din_a4 --

I am not aware of any debugger that I have seen used by the WCG techs in the past. If this is a new installation on this PC, have you looked to see that the system meets to installation requirements listed here. Memory (RAM and Virtual) seem to give a lot of folks trouble. Also verify that you are running one of the versions of Windows listed.

If you have not scanned your system recently with an anti-virus package, it is possible that you may have a virus that has corrupted the installation. If you do not have an anti-virus package, there are some listed here. I believe some, if not all of them, are available for download free.

Finally, if all else fails, you might want to try un-installing the World Community Grid software and then re-install it. It may have been corrupted when you downloaded it. If you do this, be sure to check "Already a member" during registration so that you can continue to use the member name you already are using.

Good Luck,

Re: whats to do with "unexpected error" alert?

Did you install the agent a long time ago and leave it dormant for a long time (months)? If so, that might explain such an error. It may have been trying to return a work unit that was already removed from the server data base a long time ago.

Anyway, glad it is working ok now.

Re: whats to do with "unexpected error" alert?

nothing of Lewis Carroll tips take an effect. my hardware is ok, i run no programms which bocks the traffic or the agent, i had redownload and reinstall the programm two times.

@viktors: i could not register the programm, because the alert cames before the programm start.

Hello din_a4,

Your 'Unexpected Error' is out of the ordinary. Since this is not a standard error, I suggest that we switch tracks to a general diagnostic series.

1) Go to the 'Useful Utilities' thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 to pick up some helpful utilities. I suggest that you download:

A) Belarc Advisor at http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
This is a small download that creates a web page listing basic information about your system. You can use cut-and-paste into Wordpad to create a brief report on your system.

B) SiSoft Sandra at http://www.sisoftware.net/?location=update
This download contains a number of free system diagnostic modules, including several standard benchmark routines.

C) CPU Tester: http://7byte.com/index.php?page=download
General diagnostic program

D) Memory Tester: http://www.memtest86.com/
Memory diagnostic program

2) Compare the result of Belarc Advisor with the system requirements at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq

Unfortunately, Belarc Advisor does not list your Virtual Memory, so you can go to Programs - Accesories - System Tools - System Information to check on your Virtual Memory. I have 618 MB allocated to my pagefile system at the bottom of the information list. The Rosetta program we are currently running takes up 200 MB of Virtual Memory all by itself.

Read this thread about Virtual Memory problems: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1883

Read this thread about DEP (Data Execution Prevention) problems: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1297#6096

3) Run CPU Tester

4) Run Memtest86

Sisoft Sandra is good, but it is targeted toward specific diagnostics when you think you know where the problem is. Nice to have around, but I suggest you get back to us before you play with it.

If none of this has helped, then I suggest you give us a description of your system, memory, OS, and security programs. In particular we will be interested in your firewall and anti-virus systems, plus a general description of your Internet connection.

Diagnosis can be a fun puzzle for some people on this board. tongue

Let me see if I understand what's happeneing:
You downloaded the software and installed it. This appeared to go properly. You start the agent and the first window you see is a window with "Unexpected Error"? You never see the registration window?

Some questions:
* What is the title bar of the window? What is in the body of the window? (a screenshot would be most helpful if you know how to do that.) As there anything else on the window? Other text or buttons? What are the colors of the window? Does it look like a Windows error dialog or does it look like the progrom displayed the it?
* What OS and service pack level are you running? e.g. XP Pro w/SP2
* Are you running McAffe Antivirus? There are known conflicts with a specific version.
* What CPU do you have? You said a laptop with the centrino chipset, so I assume it's either a Pentium M or a mobile Pentium 4.

Since the problem is happening before you register, the project specs required for your hardware won't come into play...because it doesn't know what the requirements are yet.

Thanks,
