A Depressing Look At Passwords

Practically all websites store passwords as the hashed output of known cryptographic algorithms. In theory, this safeguards passwords even if the password file is read by intruders. However, the following article shows that almost no password is secure if the password file can be accessed.

Re: A Depressing Look At Passwords

Hi GeraldRube,
It isn't that bad. It just means that our password security at financial institutions really depends on their own security protecting the password files. But they are supposed to have good security. Our passwords at ordinary sites are at risk - - but so what. And even if a password file that I am in is stolen and cracked, the odds that I will suffer are as minuscule as my financial resources.

Security through penury.

If hackers are determined enough, no password is safe.

Not intending to minimize this security flaw -- however --
I needed a pw eight characters long so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. wink

[It is certainly a depressing situation]
