I have BOINC 7.0.64 and nVidia version 314.22. Everything was fine until about May 11th, then new nVidia downloads stopped showing up, I saw on the log that it was requesting them, but none would download. Now it doesn't even request them anymore in the logs. The nVidia log information looks good:
5/22/2013 4:44:52 PM | | CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GT 640 (driver version 314.22, CUDA version 5.0, compute capability 3.0, 2048MB, 1915MB available, 692 GFLOPS peak) 5/22/2013 4:44:52 PM | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GT 640 (driver version 314.22, device version OpenCL 1.1 CUDA, 2048MB, 1915MB available, 692 GFLOPS peak) When it requests new jobs, I only see the CPU requesting jobs and no requests for nVidia. GPU is set for always on in the preferences. |

There are currently no GPU projects available on WCG.

Ah, ok then, it would be nice if they posted that somewhere on the projects page :) I thought something was wrong and started going off in all sorts of directions, like back dating my video driver, etc. Maybe the log should say something like, "No GPU projects available" :)

stephmipar, did you not get the recently e-mailed WCG update?, as the details of HCC being finished early (due, to the GPU contribution), was mentioned in there...

Ah, ok then, it would be nice if they posted that somewhere on the projects page :) ........ 'They' could do so much more, but then there's all these [automated] messages, like over 52% of members being on client v7, where the message/event log actually prints for what computing resource work is being requested, such as for NVidia or ATI or CPU. 4/26/2013 2:41:00 PM | World Community Grid | Requesting new tasks for NVIDIA ... and then telling there's no work available for all the projects you've selected, not to speak of the client 'Notices' feature that told of the end and also of an END of Project webcast that was held on May 29. Now that the WCG GPGPU feeder is off, this work check only happens every few weeks. WCG tells clients not to ask for longer since it's got none. Anyway, WCG will in a little while start advertising their own own WCGed v7 version of client... a little more polished and debugged than the latest Berkeley 'recommended'... lets call it a 'LTS' release (Long Term Support). That's what the corporate/college partners want rolled out to their tens of thousands of devices... a big undertaking not desired to be done every full moon. |

Hopefully these will be incorporated as the changes are large and the current alpha has eliminated many of the problems with 7.0.x (which in turn eliminated many of the problems with BOINC 6.x.x). Question: why does WCG use a separate client rather than the standard BOINC client that everyone else uses? |

Hello CanoeBeyond,
Question: why does WCG use a separate client rather than the standard BOINC client that everyone else uses? I do not have an official statement to give you,. My personal guess - - IBM is careful of its reputation and does not want to recommend a security-compromised program. So it checks its own version very carefully. Most WCG members are now using a BOINC 7 version. There have been many problems, which has slowed down the WCG version.Lawrence |

Hello CanoeBeyond, That it explains it somewhat. Didn't know that IBM chooses the client for WCG. Used to work closely with IBM for 12 years. They moved very slowly and deliberately. AFAIK though any security issues that exist in BOINC are constantly being rooted out, so would "expect" the newer versions to be more secure. No guarantees ever in security land these days.Question: why does WCG use a separate client rather than the standard BOINC client that everyone else uses?
