...As for the holidays, it now looks like I'll be able to join my wife and daughter as they visit her family. That means I'll be gone starting the 26th and getting back on the 1st (31st may happen but won't know that until then). Net for here is I'll need someone to grab a copy of the team numbers for those days. It's just a matter of pulling up a specific URL and doing a copy/paste into a text file using Notepad. If you can do this, let me know please!........ I'm still looking for a volunteer. |

A while back, I posted about what I thiught I was seeing in terms of the impact of runtime variability for MCM1. I'm still seeing that. On my quad, MCM1 WUs were taking about four hours just 2-3 days ago. Yesterday and today, they've been running 10-11 hours. The only thing I can see different in the batch number (the seven digit number after MCM1 in the WU name). Since the quad is still on 6.10.58, the completion time has gone up to reflect this. It hasn't pulled down any new work in the last two days (queue size is unchanged). On the C2D that's BOINC 7.2.33, WUs were running 5-7 hours. Today, they've gone to taking 11-12 hours. As I understand it, BOINC 7 does not use completion time to decide if to get more work. It works off an estimated time supplied with the WU. I believe this is the GFLOPs number Properties gives for Estimated computation size. At this time, every single WU on my C2D (covering batches 0000674 to 0000802) has the same value for this yet I've got WUs now that are running twice as long as yesterday. Here, the batch numbers are 0000674 vs 0000684 on the quad. The shorter running WUs were from earlier batches. The C2D continues to pull down more work. From what I get from this is that while you've said you want X amount of work in your queue, you could easily have 2X - 2.5X. If X is big enough, you could run into issues depending on your circumstances, primarily on BOINC 7. We're used to projects that have rather consistent WUs. The admins have said MCM will be more variable and they're clearly right.
