I have installed BOINC 7.064 on many of my organizations computers running as a service. I have the standard Work profile set on them with the exception that I have it Not run while the computer is active until after 3 minutes (then it can run at 100% on all CPUs). I installed them as the service option and unchecked the other two options.
----------------------------------------I removed the BoincTray from running with AutoRuns from all accounts (SysInternals tool) because I don't want the users to see anything running or any error messages. The problem is that when a normal user logs on to the computer, BOINC runs at full 100% even when the computer is in use-- stopping a critical program from launching correctly. It is not until that I launch BoincTray (using admin credentials) and then the Boinc Event Log that I see it finally "suspended due to activity" and the CPU rests. After I close (exit) boinctray it will continue to work correctly on the computer even with different logins. It seems to happen just when the computer is freshly restarted and then been sitting at the Login screen. What do I need to do to get this running using the correct settings from system start running as a service. Your problem is that you have stopped boinctray.
First off, Boinctray.exe is the BOINC idle detection program. It only runs in the background, checking for mouse movements and keyboard taps. It's mainly there for Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems plus their server versions, since these use a different security system. For Windows 2000, XP and their server versions, running either Boinc.exe or Boincmgr.exe (or both) will suffice in having BOINC detect if your computer is idle or not. It's built into Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe Boinctray.exe does not make the icon appear in the Windows system tray. That's done by running BOINC Manager. So set boinctray to run at start and you will be ok. It is Boincmgr that has an icon in systry. ![]() |

Confusing filenames... boinctray is not the tray icon...
----------------------------------------I will try this out and report back. Thank you! Any word on when this Website will link to the current BOINC client and not v6? Because this version has the issue with the AMD/ATI and nVidia graphics cards where the service install fails because it cannot connect to the client. |

Nothing definite as yet, but, "soon" has been quoted. As far as I know GPU will never be able to be used on a service install, no matter what version.....but I could be wrong. I use 7.0.64 for my GPU computes ![]() ![]() |

Yeah I use it at my desk, even though I think there are no current projects using the GPU. However, when installing v6 as a service if the PC has a useable GPU the service will not start (and the client will show Cannot connect to client), it's a bug with GPU detection and was fixed in a later version of v6 than on here. It took me a long time to figure it out and finally found a forum on the BOINC page itself that explained the issue, thus I just downloaded v7.

Warning: On Windows do not install BOINC in Protected Access Execution (PAE) mode aka service mode (6.4.5 - 7.0.28) or Service Install mode (7.0.64 and above). If you do, BOINC will not be able to detect or use your GPU. On Linux you can install BOINC as a service daemon and on certain distros configure X-server to allow BOINC access to the GPU. A strange line... the BOINC service install fails because? What version of BOINC makes not one iota of difference when you run on Windows Vista and up... a service install blocks BOINC from detecting usable GPGPU's [Says so explicitly during the install process]. Something to do with Seattle's security model. There's currently no schedule as to when that will be overcome by the Berkeley developers. That said, it seems that NVidia has opened up a bit and has started to provide documentation and is talking. Certainly on the Linux front there's hopes [and funny enough read a note that NVidia had disabled certain features on the Linux drivers side "to get functional parity with the Windows drivers they issue"... that was worth a good laugh]. Under Linux you can GPGPU using sciences when BOINC runs as a daemon... you always could. |
