Question for the Linux Adepts:

I should know better than to try fixing what is not broke....

I updated the Kernel of my Mint 14 Cinnamon install (to 3. 12 rc5)

The actual update seems to be good

However WCG (installed in my home folder) now will not start.

As I am just a user with just enough knowledge to be dangerous, I wonder do any of you have any ideas why I start manager OK but after a couple of minutes "connecting to client" I get "disconnected"

I guess I am asking is this user error or something waay deeper?

Things seem to center on the following from stderrdae:

[
Setting of real/effective user Id to 0/0 failed
ERROR: could not insert 'fglrx': Operation not permitted
Error! Fail to load fglrx kernel module! Maybe you can switch to root user to load kernel module directly
Setting of real/effective user Id to 0/0 failed
ERROR: could not insert 'fglrx': Operation not permitted
Error! Fail to load fglrx kernel module! Maybe you can switch to root user to load kernel module directly
Setting of real/effective user Id to 0/0 failed
ERROR: could not insert 'fglrx': Operation not permitted
Error! Fail to load fglrx kernel module! Maybe you can switch to root user to load kernel module directly
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 154 ()
Minor opcode of failed request: 19
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12

A permissions issue I guess but why and how to fix?

Re: Question for the Linux Adepts:

Incidentally, uninstalling fglrx allows wcg to run again.

I may try installing again after dinner.... Kinda hoping things could be that simple biggrin

EDIT: Tried fglrx, also fglrx update and finally amdccc... all to no avail. All report as installed, using the Mint software manager, but none actually start

Hope this gets fixed before the next tranch of GPU work

Meanwhile I shall have to see if it is possible to roll back on the kernel as without amd drivers power consumption is up by about 75watts

Re: Question for the Linux Adepts:

I am NOT an Adept, I do not have a POWERFUL LINUX BEARD nor do I have the POWERFUL UNIX BEARD. But have you tried removing all of the AMD specific drivers using Synaptic package manager, then use the MINT "additional drivers" utility to reinstall the kernels binary blobs?

Re: Question for the Linux Adepts:

I had a similar problem recently;
I had updated my Nvidia driver using the Mint "add driver" utility to the "recommended" version (turns out that the driver either wasnt compatible with the kernel or the update didnt remove the old kernel modules) .
The upshot was that I was left on the linux console with no X server or desktop.
To fix it, I used sudo apt to remove all traces of the Nvidia binaries/drivers/modules, deleted Xorg.conf and rebooted. This regained me my Desktop and X. Then reinstalled the old Nvidia drfvers.
So to summarise:

I had old kernel & new drivers = stuff up, so changed my drivers.

You have new kernel & old drivers =stuff up, maybe revert to old kernel or new rebuilt drivers?

Happy adventuring, use your Beard! biggrin

Re: Question for the Linux Adepts:

I use Ubuntu which is from the same family of Linux as Mint (I think). Recently I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 and it completely trashed my NVIDIA drivers. Since fglrx is also a video driver, makes me wonder if Mint is suffering from the same problem.

When I couldn't get NVIDIA working on the upgraded version of Ubuntu, I did a clean install of 13.10 and then tried to install the NVIDIA drivers the same way I installed them in 13.04. That didn't work either. I haven't tried using the Ubuntu installer for proprietary drivers because I need a specific version that is not available in the Ubuntu installer.

I've read that Canonical is making a significant change in the way they deal with video and it may be causing some compatibility issues with existing install procedures.

It's a good thing that I have another stable PC that I can use to look up error messages while I am trying to get my Ubuntu box going again.

Good luck with yours.

Re: Question for the Linux Adepts:

Thank you gents.

I may try headless for a while and let the drivers catch up.

I could also get some cheap drives for windows and just use when needed for gpu projects.... for the moment though I will leave the 1 rig on the latest core and observe performance.... which just spiked, making this a little more interesting but still need a longer term trial for reliable averages
