Single task at a time

Hi guys,

I would like to know how to setup BOINC to only start only one task at a time and use more CPU time...

For now it starts 8 tasks and run them at 13% each. It's great for small tasks but I would prefer ending one task fast and start another instead of not being sure to end 8 tasks…

TY!

Re: Single task at a time

I am afraid it is not possible. AFAIK, every task uses 1 CPU thread (the only exception are some of MilkyWay WU's). It is possible to set to run only 1 tast at the time, but it will still utilize 13% of your CPU.

Cheers peace

Re: Single task at a time

Since all WCG tasks are single threaded, it barely makes a difference if running 1 at the time or in your case 8. Each of the tasks uses all possible spare cycles of 1 processor. 8 tasks use 8 processors.

13% is actually 100% of one processor thread. This is the way Windows shows it. On Linux you'd see [near] 100% for each processor thread, so with 8 threads you'd see a total of 800%.

Re: Single task at a time

Ok ty, so if I understood I have to reduce the maximum of cores I want to share if I want 4 tasks instead of 8. But these 4 won’t use more than 13% because this is 100% of a core.

Re: Single task at a time

Zearys, Do you have an 8 core machine or is it a 4 core with multithreading? If it is the latter you may be able to turn off multithreading in your BIOS and run just the 4 cores/threads. Each would then use 25%.

Re: Single task at a time

Hello Zearys,
If you set My Grid - Device Manager - (Selected Profile) to run only 50% of your cores, your total throughput will decrease but each project will run faster since you will be dedicating a core to each work unit.
