We all know just how much Ripple is ripping through the WU,s
Is this a good thing for us ordinary folks? What happens if it is so fast that a project only lasts a couple of weeks?........or it is too fast for Project Scientists/Admin to be able to produce work for us......lots of idle PC's and us waiting for work to do!!! Discuss ![]() |

I realised 6 years ago (Jan 2008) that WCG crunching is an Arms Race.
----------------------------------------The Cock of the Walk with the biggest/deepest cash pool WILL win the points race. But it will always be a hollow victory, unless you crunch for altruistic reasons. So those that crunch for humanity, will welcome the Ripple Lab tsunami, Those that crunch for points and glory will cry ![]() Me ? bring on the ripple ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I don't see a problem, as long as people are getting real legitimate work done, the more the better. Its the projects that benefit. I assume the scientists/techs will do their best to keep the work units flowing no matter how much processing power is here. There's a lot of problems to be solved in the world.
----------------------------------------Ordinary folk can still take pride in knowing that they contributed their 1/100 of 1% to the project and every little bit counts. The folks that are contributing a lot more are also sacrificing a lot more in terms of system cost and electric rates, upkeep, etc. ![]() |

I agree there should be no problem with The Ripplers. If it helps to get the work done quicker, great. I just hope it is not a flash in the pan and hope a number of them stick around after the mania ends. WCG has claimed they can scale up and I hope they are as good as they claim. I would guess they would like a a more gradual increment of crunching so they can adjust accordingly. Crunch on.
----------------------------------------Edit: Anyone who understands the scale of the problems crunched would know there is no lack of work, just a lack of funds to prepare the work and a lack of crunching power to get it done. Cheers

I think the Ripple effect will be limited for a number of reasons. Firstly a number of the Ripple team aren't new, they were already crunching for WCG and have moved from other teams. Secondly, Ripple themselves can limit the effect. By controlling the number of their credits they award they can ensure it is unprofitable to use hired in computing power.
Finally, and most obviously, the WCG Techs can very easily sink the Ripple effect in a number of different ways... But as Sgt Joe says, I suspect WCG could find enough work to keep everyone out of mischief. Consider how the computing power of WCG has grown over the last decade or so as PC's have become more powerful. There has always been work to be done and new projects coming along. |

I just learned about this Ripple thing a few minutes ago, seeing several threads mentioning the word.
At the moment I can't say if this is going to be a problem. First of all, is WCG aware of this? Are they OK with it? If so, then I guess there is no problem. As long as nothing nasty happens with that site that could affect WCG's image, I think it's an interesting way to get more volunteers and accelerate the projects. |

They are aware of it and they have no problem with it. Sunfolk said it best.

I gladly welcome Ripple Labs crunching through huge numbers of work units. If this means that we can get through these projects faster and get these results to the research teams ASAP, all the power to them. I could really care less what motivates each individual or how we get to this end, but the final goal with respect to the project is the same: utilizing technology to solve the world's problems.

The beauty of BOINC is, that if there's momentarily no work at all or the WCG project is down, one can define additional projects that are set as 'backup' which is done by giving them a project weight / resource share of zero. Only if cores idle does BOINC fetch work from those backup projects.
Otherwise, wish we could rip through to completion for any project, FAAH not in the least or get to a point where FAAH is intermittent, experiment, study, do another experiment. Sorry, but then we'll have to find another volunteering target. |
